Charger Replacement

During long rides i carried my charger in a pannier. I was riding hard because I was late for the last train home.

I got to the station and the pannier with the charger was gone. My heart sunk.

Called the LBS they had no spares contacted giant no response. you cant buy a replacement? WTF!!!

I am terrified i will not be able to replace the charger.
I am fustrated that this is a single point of failure that i didnt realize it is what it was.

If there was a known OK we have you order it will take 2 weeks to get it to you that would be fine. But as it stands right now i have no answers and diminishing hopes that I will have one.

Sorry for your situation... But I'm sure you can get a replacement... Have you contacted Giant directly?
Side note... This is why I hate and avoid at all cost proprietary hardware.

Did a quick Google... Seems there are sellers in the EU... and that ship to the US if you can't find it locally

A good opportunity to get a Grin Satiator, it will double the lifespan of your battery and all your next ebikes to come.

Yeah i found them I need to contact them to ensure I can use a us dongle.

Typically chargers (power supplies) are rated for 100v - 240v input so you should be ok... But yes I would check.
Using an adapter is easy enough or cutting off the EU cord cap and installing a US standard one from Home Depot isn't that hard as well.
Still... Really no one in the US has one for sale?

I stay away from proprietary chargers for my bikes and stick to the $20 ones that work better. Some people like to spend more on a brand name with a logo - like the folks with a $45 logo water bottle. It makes them happy. I am happy for them.

Is this in reference to the Giant ebike chargers? Can you share details on how that can be done for Giant Energypak? I don't need an extra charge right now but I will need one in the future.

While I appreciate opensource and or standardization via ISO or other agency we are not there yet you bicycles. Comparing a logo'd bottle of water to electrical engineering specifications is an over-simplification at best and idiotic at worst.

Do you have shimano shifters? Please let me know when you can add a SRAM derailuer. then talk about generics.

Point taken. I still like the anti-status subversion. What if the Jones' found out I had a $17.50 generic charger? Indexing happens at the shifter by the way. So yes, I will use something like a Micro-shift derailleur with a Sram shifter or a Micro-shift lever shifter for a Nexus Inter 7-speed, ditching the dorky Shimano twist shift. I am the idiot who makes tons of misstates daily and who learns to makes things work. The LBS folks say No No, because they like to sell logo group sets to those who faithfully drink their Cool Aid. To me it is like the people who keep the gold sticker on the brim of a logo baseball cap to boost their status.

I'm wondering if this is one of those cases that the big name elites are always touting about. You know when you need something for your bike you have a reputable company and dealer network to service your every need. You remember, it's what you say to justify paying through the nose... or maybe just to say look at what I have.

No, it's a post-pandemic supply chain issue. Everyone has to pay thru the nose for anything and everything.

Ebike manufacturers/assemblers might be stuck between a rock and a hard place where they barely have enough to complete a boxed bike for retail.

For those that can't afford a Grin Satiator universal charger (is US$300 that much for an already expensive activity?), there are other lower cost universal chargers out there.

Yes, Grin Satiator does have a communications signal on its XLR cables.

I remember something similar during the laptop boom after Y2K, and laptop theft was so high, we knew it was mostly theives/fences/pawn shops asking for replacement power suppliers. We surged the prices for anyone that wasn't a regular client of ours.

ehhh... Maybe some truth there
But if it wasn't proprietary you'd have a thousand and one sources. Kinda like any android phone by 10's of manufacturers that can charge using a world wide standard of micro USB or USB C... Unlike iCrApple.

What are you talking about? You do know that the Grin Satiator has about a dozen different charging dongles to plug to whatever batteries?
I'm talking about the charger that the OP was forced to buy. And though the Grin is a very nice charger for those with a lot of different batteries it's no bargain for someone who has one or three of the same voltage. Add to it that I built a variable SOC adapter with current and watt readout for my charger for $20 worth of off the shelf parts. Granted, no data logging, but I don't think that is worth $280 either

I'll add that it's only 7 dongles and you better read the description of each before you start cheerleading.

How silly of me. Forgetting how everyone can DIY that on their own.

I'll add that it's only 8 dongles and you better read the description of each before you start cheerleading.
8 rounded up to the next dozen is "about a dozen".

Besides, it so easy to makeup your own dongles with "$20 worth of off the shelf parts".

Yes, I am cheerleading because I own one and love it, thanks :D

Can't say the same for others that are missing a charger, and probably can't use their ebike either.

Actually it's only 7 dongles... and the bs Anderson, XT60 ones, yeah ok for $20... But go make up one of the European ones...especially when you can't make a variable SOC adapter 🤣

Folks shouldn't even buy branded manufacturerd bikes at all, because it's so easy to just DIY convert their existing pedal bike :D

There's the right bike out there for everyone. They're all descent bikes as is an iPhone a good phone. My itch is the proprietary hardware that locks you up and in.
So do what makes you happy... Just don't insist that yours is better because you paid through the A$$
