Bosch Smart System

Is anyone seeing bikes with the Bosch Smart system at their local bike shops? Where I live (MA) I have yet to see bikes with the 750 watt battery and I feel like buying anything else would feel outdated in a year or so. Does anyone else feel that way?

I know it is not a phone. It is more expensive than a phone. If you buy the current Bosch system your options to upgrade the system will be limited.

I am actually interested in hearing about availability of ebikes with the Smart system at local bike shops.

bosch as not been about upgrades within the system.

According to statements by Bosch, the Smart system will allow one to download new functions and update components via Bluetooth. However, my question is really about availability at local bike shops and how folks feel about buying the non Smart System technology.

It sounds to me that it is not a concern for you?

no bosch is pretty slow about implementing improvements so I would wait a few years till the bugs are worked out. it depends on what your after in a bike. the system may to accent to ANT stuff and that will be good but who knows how long it ill take to get there?

A year ago, I bought a Trek Allant 8s, mostly because little else was available, and while the bike and Bosch components have by and large been great, the smartphone hub and Cobi.bike app have been a complete dog. Quirky, poorly documented and evidently not updated since Bosch acquired it from its developer 4-5 years ago. If it weren't for kind help from some Bosch reps here, I wouldn't be able to use it.
I say this because based on my limited experience, some companies may over-promise future capabilities. Bosch reps themselves have told me it is unreasonable to expect new functionality after purchase, for example.
If your interest is mainly the new higher capacity battery, this may not matter to you. But I suspect you're gonna pay. Trek, for example, seems to offer the new Bosch Smart System in its bikes that retail for over $9,000, such as the Rail 9.8 XT.
So the main reason you're not seeing any on the floor is probably because the new system hasn't moved down to the price point where they're displayed. Remember that the OEMs decide what goes onto which bike, not Bosch. We consumers technically aren't even the customers for most Bosch DU components!

Very interesting. At least the bike and components have been great. $9K is still a big expenditure for a bike and hopefully the consumer will be a focus for companies like Bosch when prices are at that level. In the meantime, it appears that there are limited options for consumers at that local bike shops if they are looking for the most up to date technology.

If what you want is a bigger battery, many of the better bosch equipped bikes can be set up with an official bosch range extender, essentially an additional 500 watt-hr battery. For instance, my Allant 8s comes with a 625 watt battery. The range extender would take the total to 1125 watts. In practice, though, my bottom can't take a ride that uses more than about 1/3 of the stock battery capacity, and I live in a hilly area. For instance an 18 mile ride might include 1500 feet of climbing. YMMV (literally!) especially depending on your taste for speed, but I think ebike technology is already leveling off pretty rapidly. It's far more important, I think, to buy from brands you can expect to be around in the future. You know the names. There's already cries for help on these boards from folks who bought "affordable" ebikes from companies who are already out of business, leaving them in the lurch for repair parts. Something to think about.

I am waiting for all the parts to add an extra battery to my Allan 8 as trek sells all the parts and battery as a kit and I already have the battery and it limits my range. I can get 40 miles on a flattish ride but most of my rides can have a fair amount of hills and I cant do them till the extra battery is added. hopefully next week. I jsut got a new lock so this bike will ahve the same key as my other two keys and the locks and my garage.
