Bosch range: Smart System vs eBike System 2

I was using the Range Assistant to check if there was any difference between the Performance Line Speed and Performance Line CX motors and it showed a consistent 7-10% advantage to the CX. Sort of expected as you are likely to go faster with the Speed and thus have greater wind resistance, even though the average speed could be the same for both versions. I don't know if this is how they calculate it though, or if you have a similar speed profile in both, they will end up with the same range.

But it also showed a noticeable difference between the Smart System and System 2 where the new Smart System gives around 8% LESS range in Eco mode. I just used the standard configuration, but adjusted the Battery to be the same Wh in both cases and used either the Speed or CX motor.

Does anyone know if this is actually the case, or is it just another bug in the Assistant?

NB I did find one bug in the Assistant. If you select a Battery Range Extender for the Smart System, it also adds it to the System 2 calculations giving a huge and incorrect range. (Bosch tell us you cannot fit a Range Extender to the System 2 anyway.)

My assumption is that their algorithm includes a range if speeds to add up to the average speed. Probably similar to a bell curve. So the 28mph models get less range due to time spent at higher speeds. That's pretty consistent with estimated ranges I get with custom riding modes on the Nyon. It gives a boosted estimate if the mode gives 0 assist above 20mph.

As far as range differences btw Smart System and System 2, there's no way to know for sure. They could have more aggressive tunes on the Smart System assist modes (that's consistent with giving a higher Nm rating and higher top assist % with several drive units on the Smart System). I would also guess that they might have more power reserved for stuff like eshifting, the connect module, ABS, lights etc in the Smart System.

I ran into that bug too trying to compare my bike with a potential new bike+extender.

I agree with the speed bell curve. Energy wise I'm pretty conservative, spending 90% in Eco (still trying to keep/get fit) and it's only occasionally I get up to the 45 kph assist level, as on the flat that's fair powering it in Eco. Interesting to note you can do that level of customisation with the Nyon, I only have the Intuvia which is pretty basic.

Interesting to read you thoughts on the differences the Smart and System 2, guess we will never know for sure. I too was trying to compare a possible purchase moving from my 2x500 Wh to 750 + 250 extender. I actually have a Speed motor, System 2, but if someone went from a CX motor System 2 to a Smart Speed system, based on the Bosch numbers, they could see a significant decrease in range. Of course only important if you are squeezing the last bit out of it on some trips. Decommission the built-in lights and you get another 10% anyway. :)
