Ampler Curt

Hi all,

These 3 are in my top list for single speeds and I need your help to decide.

Each has single speed carbon belt drive

Enki has mid drive Bafang

Deskinio looks uber premium

Ampler is slightly lighter and comes with lights

Price:
- Enki $3395USD (but on kickstarter currently $1990)
- Desiknio €3590EUROS
- Amper €2890EUROS

I currently ride a single speed non-ebike because it suits my city, and imho you can't beat the look and chainline of a ss.

Thoughts?

Ampler Curt! Yikes! 14kg(30lbs)!!! Sweet bike to be sure, Great lighting and fenders included. Makes me wish I were young enough to have a bike like this as a class3 or better. I'm not a kickstarter fan and would rather go with an established builder. 25kph would disappoint but I'm assuming that's something you have to live with. I'd love to see hw they do the battery. Talk about stealthy bikes!!!! Aikema motors are know to be able to take power increases, but regardless they are a well known and widely used motor in the world of eBike DIY builders. Nice, just nice!

I know right!? A good 2lbs lighter than Enki's Miller ebike and the urban. They're all super stealthy - that's what makes it so hard to choose!!

I've got no problem with kickstarter, as I've bought quite a few things successfully there before. And Enki has been around for a little while now.

Ampler are German based so no doubt they have great craftsmanship. The thing is, are Ampler and Desiknio worth the extra $1000+ over the Enki?

hmmmpff

Now this a great presentation to the thread.

I lean to the styling of the Desiknio but if I were to purchase it, I'd make some mods and it probably wouldn't look as nice post-mods (elevated stem, seatpost suspension, fenders, rack if possible etc). Ampler is out-of-the-box more commuter-ready.

As far as judging the value in the $1K price difference - it is really hard to do without side by side specs. But the big difference maker is going to be in the electronics. A mid-drive Bafang vs the Mahle hub vs the Aikema hub. This is where the meat and potatoes of the comparison should lie. Other important variables might be the various upgrade options the brands offer (i.e. Desiknio offers a carbon fork and a water bottle battery add-on for example ...) and, as previously mentioned, the track record of the builders.

But I'm with the prior post that all of them are great looking bikes. An advantage for an urban environment is that they aren't obviously electric and it requires a second look to determine that.

Thanks Over50 for the guidance. Here's what I could find on the motors.

Note that the hub motor weight above doesn't include the other system parts like controller and BB which adds ~1kg.

Is a carbon fork that much better than an alu one?

The Aikema is crazy light! At least 30% lighter than the M500.

The Bafang has some incredible torque at 95Nm! I believe because it is usually used on MTB bikes, not street.

I couldn't find the M1 rear wheel rpm, and the Bafang is the rear wheel equivalent from what I'm thinking is the 50x20 gearing. It could be 55x20, in which case the rear wheel rpm would be higher.

They are all really nice single speed rides... you can't go wrong with any one of the choices. ;)

Enki - I would go for the 95 Nm of torque with the mid-drive Bafang.
Deskinio - definitely the best aesthetics and super clean design.
Ampler - really set up if you are going to use as a commuter.

Yeah I think that's what has had me stuck. They all look really great and each has its advantages.

Ok I just checked Enki's kickstarter page and they're now offering a 3 speed hub most likely nexus. Is this a winner at the curent $2190 price? Apparently its 39% off their $3595usd retail. I'm *this* close to saying yes...

But Bafang. Aikema has much wider acceptance among builders. And handles some increased power. Perfect 2WD motors too.

I just bought the 3-speed hub version! Thanks all for the guidance. I'll have to post some pics when I finally get it. So hyped rite now!!!!

Great choice on the IGH 3-speed... I am thinking about getting one also with 40% off for pre-ordering. ;)

Do you know their track record with previous Kickstarter campaigns... did they deliver on time?

They were successful with their previous campaign a few years ago and apparently they're the only ones to ever deliver on time. Hopefully they will maintain there track record on this one 🤞

My vote is for the IGH 3-speed hands down. The Bafang is a big selling point with 3 speed seals the deal for me. Good Luck!

I am ready to place my order, however, the only thing holding me back is the 20 kmh speed limit... only 12.5 mph!
Does anyone make a speed limit hack for the Bafang mid-drive? I have the BadAssBox on all of my other rides. ;)

Just found the EBR summary of the Desiknio... 20 mph limit/Single Speed.

Summary

  • A sleek, quiet, incredibly lightweight, single speed electric bike, made in three frame sizes and four colors with hydraulic disc brakes, very limited quantity
  • Smooth welds, internally routed cabling, completely hidden battery pack, and compact hub motor make this e-bike super stealthy, it blends in
  • High attention to detail, the motor cable is tucked in and well protected, all of the components match in black, the rims and tires are upgraded
  • Super responsive 20 magnet cadence sensor, reliable belt drive, minimalist control interface but there's a smartphone app, smaller battery and motor, battery is not removable for separate charging
