It certainly seems like the manufacturers, especially Samsung and Sanyo are very much in the development phase of making what is arguably the most important part of e bikes better. Extending the life cycle of batteries and improving their output at the same time is a win win for e bikes. Exciting times....

Batteries are changing and I'm glad to see talk of it trickling down to our little packs. Solid state lithium ion batteries have been in development for 4 or more years; 2016 brought a lot of movement by many large universities to get in on this. Seems slow going, but I guess getting the chemistry right, and accounting for safety is a tough task.

Dyson has a big piece of solid state. Lots of players, lots of markets.

I see 18650 cells for $5 or so. If it takes 50 to make a pack, that is 250 dollars. A 20% reduction won't do much.

I wonder if anything will emerge between, say, a Chevy Bolt and an ebike. Something small, cheap, more comfortable in winter, stuff like that...

I'm surprised there are not more pack repair, upgrade, or resell of recondition/refurbish places online for all the different types of available ebike battery packs? Looks like it would cost less to to replace or upgrade the 18650 cells compared to purchasing a new battery pack for +$500.
