Wow, CAN bus and $115 programmer cable. That's rough. I have a decade old Bionx ebike that uses CAN bus and the official programmer was only $40. Even the DIY programming options for CAN bus like the Crumb128 and TinyCAN circuit boards are cheaper than that.

Guess there will be a cottage industry in fitting the original controller.

Couldn’t you just gut the controller and extend the phase wires to connect, say, a KT controller?

In my discussion with GBK... the UART Ultra (and I believe all Bafang motors) are going CANbus only for new motor by years end.
GBK told me that UART controllers and associated parts will still be available for quite a while.
