How deep are your pockets?

Ariel are the makers of the Ariel Atom the legendary stripped down exposed chassis road/track car and this is their first e-bike - only $11k or so. Interestingly, the first bike the company made was a Penny Farthing 150 years ago.

Lovely looking thing it has to be said.

Very nice indeed, though they so missed out on this.

I really like this bike, but like Stefan I'm not a fan of the Mahle X motor, I wonder about mixing titanium and carbon in the frame, and the price is way more than I'd be willing to spend.

I’m gobsmacked by those who can conceptualize projects and possess the skills to fab from scratch with amazing end results. Milling the laminations for the wood wheel would have taken hours along with clamping and gluing the pieces together. I did something similar producing a cedar strip kayak coaming from mahogany strips using epoxy instead of glue but at least all of the lams were pre-milled for me.

it’s an interesting and nice looking frame - these carbon / titanium hybrids don’t really have any purpose (heavier and more expensive than carbon, fussier and more fragile than titanium) but they look great! 11k for an x20 road bike with GRX though? that‘s just silly. there are better specified bikes with the same motor, battery, similar weight, for thousands less. worth it simply if you like the ti/carbon style.

Seems like the Ti-CF interfaces would create unnecessary stress risers that could jeopardize the frame's overall strength — especially against big jolts.

Lugged carbon tubes was how a lot of OG carbon bikes frames were made. In this case, I would imagine they are trying to avoid the expense of developing full carbon molds ($$$$) but still wanted a bit of carbon to show off. Easier to pay a few welders to handbuild titanium at very low volumes and glue some carbon tubes in there. I'm sure they are plenty strong, but I also roll my eyes at the idea that this is something revolutionary.

This isn't a bike for anyone on this forum. Its a bike/marketing exercise for people who are into high-end cars (generally) and Ariel (specifically). High end car manufacturers are more lifestyle brands than car companies these days. I doubt they intend on selling very many, and most of the people who buy them will be people who don't really ride bikes much (if at all) and probably won't ride this much (if at all) either.

right, a bit like the highly customizable aston martin road bike. but that one was really a no-expense spared custom bike, with many very impressive (if slightly impractical?) details :
