Are the 700 XR handlebars OK?

Just wondering if the XR handlebars allow an upright riding position? Anyone feel the need to replace them with one like the ST?

It is a straight bar with low rise, and the stem is fixed, so no, you are not going to be sitting bolt upright as configured. I'm certain many people will or have already replaced the saddle, stem, and/or handlebars.

I have the xr and I'm 5'7 and find them perfect. The stem is adjustable, contrary to another reply. I angled the stem a bit more upwards, not too much, adjusted the display and the throttle but everything is perfect. Riding position is relaxed. I too was afraid that I would need to reach the handlebar too far forward, but not the case for me. Love it, very comfy riding. No regrets! As for the seat, I found it a bit uncomfortable in the beginning but changed the seat post to a Suntour suspension and wow, what a difference. The seat stays!

what model year are you talking about? My bike arrived in late April and the stem is adjustable

Sorry if I was mistaken about the stem. I was merely going by the photo of the bike On R1U's site, which clearly shows a fixed stem.

They must have changed it after the first production run. The one EBR reviewed did not have an adjustable stem and the photos on the R1U site also show a fixed stem.

Your right I just checked... I was looking at buying the ST for my wife... I will check with them to make sure.

here's the answer I just received :
"Hello, some 700 generations have a fixed stem, while some have an adjustable 110mm stem. We we're gathering feedback and opinions. The stems are very similar, but we will be using the 110mm adjustable stem as is on your bike from here on out as it seems to be more popular so riders don't have to make customization on their own."

he added : " Generally we try not to change parts between generation/photo updates, unless they are upgrades. The photos also don't reflect some other upgrades that were made. Sometimes, we hope with upgrades customers will just be happy to see them. So we want to make sure they are popular if we are going to make a change. "

I'm really impressed with how quickly they reply to queries, especially knowing how busy they are. Awesome
