This story shows that sometimes you have no chance...( at least not without a mirror) https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbiAttach filesa/vancouver-cyclist-hit-by-overhanging-load-1.5673995
The sad part about this story is the idiot driver of this pickup truck will get off with nothing more than a fine.
There is very little consequences for drivers in British Columbia who hit cyclists.
he said he did not notice that it had shifted. The link would not allow me to read the story. Was he actually hauling it like that or did the load somehow shift from hanging off the rear of the truck to the side during a fast stop, curve or something?
So in other words he was hauling it with the tailgate up. Anyone who has ever hauled in a Pickup knows that in itself is a recipe for disaster : For a Lousy $10 You make a 2x4 Jig that tailgates just naturally hold in place : The Jig Extends the tailgate another 4-6 feet : This must have been loaded at a Home Depot or Menards where people loading it were inexperienced . Or didn't carehe said he did not notice that it had shifted.
I used to have an adjustable bed extender that attached to a 2" receiver. I once hauled a 40' ladder in the bed of a Nissan Frontier using that with no problem. So in other words he was hauling it with the tailgate up.
