Hello, I am a novice bike rider and need some advice. I am currently in Israel and was given a Foffa single speed bike that I believe has a pedal assist rear hub. I know nothing about hub or electric bikes. The guy who gave it to me said it needed work for the hub to work. I took the bike out...

I also had a 3-speed that needed to have a rim brake because pedaling backwards only allowed the hub to switch gears.
I couldn't remember what the 2-speed had, but I saw the torque arm and figured it had coaster brakes?


That's what a Buffalo Bike needs!!!

This has all been done before.
People keep trying to reinvent the wheel .

I'm kinda smelling proprietary parts selling in shops in Africa ?
Are they creating a monopoly?

I say send a bunch of updated CCM Mustang Duomatic's rear wheels to Africa that fit a Buffalo
Competition is a good thing.

I'd rather ride a than a anyway.

I had a CCM Mustang Duomatic in the 60's,

I had the very first affordable full-suspension bike that was available.
A CCM Supra, I think it was called?
$400 at Canadian Tire in the early 90's

The bike weighed a Ton and was A PIG to pedal. It was just bouncing springs and big knobby tires.
It was fine going downhill, but pedaling it back up the hill sucked.

My new pig has a motor, so I don't care what it weighs.

Electric would seem the way to because cheap solar panels can charge bike batteries, even motorcycle batteries.
Plenty of sun in most of Africa.
I dont know how easy it is to get gas, but it does require a refinery somewhere.
This is Nairobi.
Its as first world as anywhere.

When watching the vid you will see actual Buffalo Bicycle-branded shops, and learn that not only do more than 100 shops exist in communities served, but those shops have 3500 trained mechanics.

He is simply mistaken. All that would cure that is watching the video. Also going to the World Bicycle Relief web site will reveal discussion of the subject, such as this excerpted direct quote:

It's the Real workhorse in Africa.
It's been riden around Africa for over a century.

All this bike needs is one of these built into the hub,..

Maybe beef it up a little for a more durable design ?

Instead of introducing a luxury two-speed Buffalo that costs as much as a house in some places on the continent, they could instead offer an old-school two-speed hub/wheel assembly designed for their old-school bicycles.

You would just swap a new wheel into your old one-speed bicycle, even the first generation Buffalo Bike, and you've got a two speed bicycle that's as reliable as the original bike.

You could even sell them (or give them?) just the hub, or a hub with the proper spokes needed to string it into their old rims.

Here's a dude from the bike-packing link that is stringing up a hub,..

He's not a brain scientist or rocket surgeon, but I'm sure he could string up a "gifted" 2-speed hub to enhance his productivity ?
Hell, even I can do it, and I can barely tie my own shoe laces.

I am all against people wanking when they see any "new revolutionary idea" when a proven solution would perfectly do but it would not get any media coverage. A charity donating a big number of regular bikes to an African community? Blah. Some bikes with "revolutionary design" delivered? WOW! The charity could deliver a number of US$219 e-bikes @harryS has just bought from Amazon to a better effect.

Like the spokeless e-bike Seth bought, declared it "the worst e-bike ever" (justly) and then he still rides it because he cannot sell that crap but has no money for something good and he has no sponsors.

I see something very "Specialized" going on ??

I saw 85 yr. old mom and pop bike shops in Africa being put out of business by Buffalo who won't allow them to be dealers for their new Buffalo bikes while Buffalo executives are jet setting it around the world eating up most of the profits.

When I say there are no stores, I meant retail stores like we have in the west for Trek and Specialized. You must see the difference. Providing bikes to people for less than a $200 donation, is not a money grab. I researched the bike and this charity as a suggestion to a group for a donation. Thanks to @m@Robertson for adding detail to the topic.
