What tire combo would be better? 45 Nrth WrathChild 29 -2.6. Or Schwable Ice Ripper Plus 29-2.25? Bike is a Trek Rail 9.7.Want to run hard pack groomed trails.
Well, I did previously post a response but it appears that thread was deleted. I was running 29 x 2.6 Wrathchilds (252 studs/tire) back when I owned the Trance X E but switched to the ISPs (400 studs/tire) simply because the stud count on the Spiker Pros was significantly higher and held the bike firmly when traversing over really icy conditions. A buddy who also rides a Levo shod with ISPs was always quicker on icy singletrack so the Spikers certainly brought things up to speed. I do feel that both tires were all round good performers on hardpack with the 2.6 WCs maybe being a bit more solidly planted with their slightly larger footprint. That being said, the pointed studs on the ISPs will likely wear out faster over time than the concave versions of the Wrathchilds especially if you happen to ride over bare asphalt more often than usual. Just my .02 FWIW.
2.25 ISPs on groomed hardpack, essentially XC ski trails with a few icy patches. Tires performed well on both climbs and descents.
