The plastic case has two compartments, the big battery part, and a small part (towards the front of the bike) for the controller. There are two screws underneath that hold the cover over the little compartment. I couldn't get to those two screws without unmounting the whole plastic housing though.

Got mine! ... but a piece of the rear rack snapped off and rear fender is horribly bent, lol. Seems like I lost the gamble, lol. Will test the bike later to see how it rides in general and decide what to do next.

Someone else who bought the bike on sale apparently received it super damaged, so I don't want to order $100-$150 worth of upgrades to find out that I have the same problem, lol.
