The drive will feel a little "loose". When you press on the pedals, it will feel like the inside of the drive is not tightly fastened. This could be due to the bearings or... the gears. Normally you would need the kit if there has been water ingress or other substances (as explained above) but...

Check the documentation that came with the bike. I've noticed that in the manuals they often explicitly give the drive numbers. I say "numbers" because sometimes the manual pertains to several different bike models.
