Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Hey KenM.: Wowzer man; where'd you come from? (You just did a horizon job on me.) Happy belated birthday too. I've got a question for you: If I'm as old as dirt, what are you as old as? Go Team EBR! (Especially KenM. who clearly kicks a** and takes names.) Allen

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Yeah Grench, I'm going to more AA meetings. The Grey Ghost is gonna' turn over 4,000 miles this week and I had 1,000 days sober last week. It's all good and it's great to be part of this team (and that one too). Go Team EBR! Allen

Sorry KenM: I'm too busy chasing my tail to chase you. Go Team EBR! Allen

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

I'm baaaaack! Don't know what's been going on with me logging into EBR but I got it going tonight. I haven't logged any miles for the team but I'll 'git 'er done tonight. I've been riding to work almost every day of the challenge. Go Team EBR! Allen

God willing and the creek don't rise, I will be a proud member of Team EBR again. Wild horses couldn't keep me away! Go Team EBR! Allen

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Hey KenM: It looks within specs to me. If you really care about stuff like this, I suggest you keep the tire in my backyard and the rim in yours. Betcha' after one night they'll fit perfect. Stuff gets smaller in cold weather ya' know. (At least that's what I keep telling my girlfriend.) Allen

Commute bike 12 miles Marin to SF, hilly

I had heard that mid-drives are noisy and I've seen videos of (noisy) high-end models from Optibike. But I gotta' say, the Optibike I bought—the Pioneer Allroad—is as quiet as a church mouse and would climb trees if I let it. My commute to work includes a short stiff grade in the 18-20% range...

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Hi KenM: No, I just changed the oil in my pickup truck, but we got absolutely no snow here at all. I feel for our brethren on the mid-Atlantic seaboard though. They got the sh** kicked out of them, capisce? Allen

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Ken M.: I don't know if that's an 8N or a 9N, but you sir have no idea how many hours I've spent in the saddle of various Ford 8Ns and 9Ns. None of them had a sweet cab like that rig though. (One of them did have a Sherman auxiliary transmission which gave it an overdrive that could get up to...

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Dear KenM: There's no way in he** I'd leave my door open this time of year; I'd have ice in my toilet. I've weenied out the last two days and taken rides in to work from my boss. Tomorrow I'm Gray Ghosting it though. Speaking of that mighty whip, she just turned over 3,000 miles. This is all...

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

Dear KenM: Dude, your such a weenie! That sound like a heatwave to me. It's 3º F outside my cottage right now, and I rode the Grey Ghost to work and back today. That commute was in the low-teens with a very annoying wind right from the North Pole. (There was light snow on the way home and I...

    Cat-Ears Wind Noise Reduction

I hadn't heard of the Cat-Ears, but like FitzChivalry, I've been rocking a pair of Wind-Blox for a year or so, and they work really nicely. They don't attenuate the sound of cars and trucks approaching from behind but they tame the wind noise nicely, when you go above 16 mph or so. Allen

This was probably my best Christmas ever. I got to spend some really nice days with my Children and Grandchildren. And some not-so-bad ones with my former wife. Allen

What are your suggestions for winter cycling peace of mind?

I run studded Nokia Hakkapeliitta tires on my Optibike. I also have some warm winter boots, thermal long johns, a thin cap inside my helmet with the Winter helmet liner installed, Planet Bike Borealis lobster claw double gloves, and a nice Merino wool scarf worn Parisienne style. Despite all...

Yeah, it's broken for me too. I'm just saving them in a file on my computer until they fix the website. Allen

Let's see your best pic of your electric bicycle

Hi all: Well here's an obligatory Fall picture of the Grey Ghost. The battery is inside at work because it stayed in the mid-30ºs all that day. I guess it's almost time to put the studded Hakkapeliittas on because—though this week is mild—old man Winter can't be far away here in the quiet...

What's a good bike repair reference?

I've found Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance and Park's Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair to both be useful. Allen

Anyone here joined the National Bike Challenge?

I don't think the ground is frozen yet, but pretty much everything else is. In other words, it's as cold as a well-digger's a**. But hey, that's Winter in New England right? It's not for nothing that the birds fly South; come to think of it, so do most of my neighbors. It was 29º F when I rode...

    Would like to go faster!

Text from one of my favorite bumper stickers: Physics; not just a good idea…It's The Law Also, with regard to speed sensing, my Optibike has one of these Hall effect sensors on the left chain stay and a corresponding magnet on one of the rear spokes. They tell the controller how fast the Grey...

Stuff needed for Winter commuting with Fat bike

Since it's pretty much pitch dark when I get out of work now, I can't ride with my terminally-hip Oakley Gascans on. So I wear my terminally-hip Mach Scbnell goggles from Portland Design Works: Amazon has got 'em for $15.00 with free shipping. They fold and go in a groovy little drawstring...
