2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Framing seemed pretty good to me. The 1st video played normally, but the 2nd video came out like this: Why is the sound of gravel crunching under bike tires so satisfying?

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

My situation's a little different. Most offroad surfaces here are hardpack with anywhere from a fraction of a millimeter to several inches of loose dry sand on top. We also have a lot of grades above 8%. Traction-wise, the 40 mm Tracers are VASTLY better than 38 mm Pathfinders on that stuff —...

Wahoo ELEMNT Ace (on Specialized E-Bikes)

The ACE generally seems pretty accurate, but there are exceptions. For example, interesting to watch the ACE's ground vs. wind speed fields. As you'd hope, the wind speed reading is usually the faster one in a head wind and the slower in a tail wind — but not always. Maybe it gets confused when...

Wahoo ELEMNT Ace (on Specialized E-Bikes)

Yep, that fixed it. Could've sworn I tried that, but apparently not. @Stefan Mikes , the upper right side button doesn't feel stuck. Must've pressed it inadvertently when I was trying to turn the ACE off. Thanks, guys!

Wahoo ELEMNT Ace (on Specialized E-Bikes)

Here's a weird one My ACE's screen has somehow taken on a large font that leaves only the top 5 of 11 fields visible on my custom home (workout data page), like so... The other 2 custom pages I use are similarly affected, including the map page. The home page is supposed to look like this...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

The SL 1 makes a pretty good flat-bar gravel bike. Good discussion of gravel tire options and trade-offs. My recent SL 1 makeover was mainly to get a better-for-purpose tubeless rear gravel tire (a 40 mm Tracer) than the existing semi-slick 38 mm Pathfinder Pro. 40 mm Tracer with low center...

    Happy perihelion!

One approach would be to look up the date and time of perihelion, the date and time of the closest perigees, then look over a local tide table with phases of the moon to see how the highest and lowest tides around these times correlate. King (high) tides by definition occur annually at the full...

It's been 2 yrs since I messed with that light mount, but I don't recall a screw between mount and stem. Wiggled mine just now, and no left-right play. I know you wouldn't be asking if it were just a matter of tightening the screw holding the light to the mount.

    Commuter Bike Setup

Don't have enough experience with different pannier brands to make recommendations, but Ortlieb is a highly regarded brand with a wide selection of sizes and designs. Just got a single new Ortlieb pannier and Quick Rack and both seem well-made and cleverly designed. Wife and I also have Topeak...

Show us pictures of where you ride your ebikes!

Took our son visiting from Denver to Oceanside Harbor for a walk on Harbor Beach, then dinner on the water. The harbor's a very popular cycling destination. From home in south Carlsbad, it's just 10 beautiful rolling miles north on the Coast Highway. End up riding there a lot with the missus...

Show us pictures of where you ride your ebikes!

A lot to be said for loops, but I like out and backs, too. A good route out is generally a good route back as well. Also, interesting routes tend to look a lot different in the other direction. You see things you never noticed on the way out, and and you also have the benefit of the big picture...

    Lithium ion battery best practice

Tell me about it! I have 78 year-old knees, and the orthopedist and I just threw in the towel on the right knee. Hoping for replacement in November, so recovery can overlap the very wet El Nino winter everyone's predicting here. There's a very good solution for that — an inexpensive plug-in...

    Lithium ion battery best practice

Welcome aboard! I've seen the 80/20 recommendation from enough credible sources to take it as a good rule of thumb to follow when feasible. But I only have 320 Wh of battery and often run closer to 90/20. FWIW, the Specialized app says my battery is in perfect health at 2 years and 4300 mi.

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

It may be safer than I think here. It's very common to see unlocked ebikes parked at popular surfing spots. Mostly 20" fat tire Rad Rover-like bikes, some with surfboard racks. Once happened to be there when a group of teen surfers came back to their bikes. Asked how they could feel comfortable...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

I'd like to do much more shopping by bike, but I still can't bring myself to leave my SL unattended, and I'm very picky about where I'll leave my old hub-drive as well. We have a big supermarket just half a mile away. Suggested to the missus that we bike there together once a week. One can shop...

Try and see how even a single 10 lb panier feels. Not a deal-killer.

    Commuter Bike Setup

Not a deal-killer in normal use. You adapt to the minor unbalance without thinking. Might be different with a very heavy single pannier, but guessing you're not hauling rock most days. What you might notice, though, is the difference in handling when you carry the same weight low in a pannier...
