Thanks! Got really lucky. He kept coming back by my location, and I could see my phone screen well enough to keep him in the frame through most of it. Definitely requesting hawk for my next life after watching this one work the bluff.

The post-tropical remnant of Hurricane Rachel passed over us to the NE 36 hrs ago, bringing wind, rain, and more big waves. Today's 11 mi coast ride was cut short by a straggling shower coming right at me at a pretty good clip. But still had time for several remarkable sightings. First, the...

Watching the peloton - Professional Road Racing thread 2026

NBC may be grooming Larry Warbasse for a commentary slot when he's done racing. He's 36 now. We saw a lot of him on NBC in 2026 — much more than I remember in previous years. Definitely what I call an ILP (instantly likeable person). Besides being one of the most videogenic riders in the pro...

2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I say, as long as you're riding responsibly, you should ride any way you darn well please — with or without numbers and graphs or cadence and rider power data from the bike. I happen to like the quantitative side of cycling in a casually curious scientific sort of way. But that's strictly...

Great-looking bike — maybe even with enough battery capacity to meet your demanding needs. There's a very good solution for your very common gripe — an inexpensive plug-in timer: Get a feel for your charging rate in %/hour. Mine's a pretty reliable 40%/hour or 10% every 15 minutes. Plug...

Friday's 16 mi coast ride started with a bit of an adventure. First came 2-3 mi of sandy hardpack on our local rail trail. Destination: The new rail bridge being built over Batiquitos Lagoon — here from an earlier ride. The bridge was already taking construction traffic, but I'd always found...

Using reference-image transformation to explore e-bike styling, color schemes, and accessory setups

The last RIT experiment I posted here asked AI to take the fenders and rear rack off my bike. Promised to show how close it got. Bike with stock fenders and rack. AI fender and rack removal. Real fender and rack removal. Interestingly, AI did an excellent job removing the fenders and rack...

Using reference-image transformation to explore e-bike styling, color schemes, and accessory setups

The OP's online AI image generator has many more features than the simple AI tool in my phone's built-in image editor. Interesting that he never came back to emphasize that.

Juvenile Cooper's hawk on our patio this morning. Usually dozens of small finches and munios on or buzzing around this thistle feeder. But they all vanish when a raptor shows up.

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Life is complicatd, no? Need to pony up for a range extender before even contemplating another set of wheels, so 40 mm is my foreseeable future. Fine with me. Every indication so far is that 40s will be fine for my needs.

Understood. Didn't you get a 42 on the front of your de-fendered SL 1? With the stock rims? No room for a 45, right?

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Good arguments for having multiple widths to choose from, but the SL will likely be stuck with 40s for the foreseeable future. Widths between 40 and 45 mm seem to be vanishing — at least in the gravel tires I'm interested in. Guessing the rear could take a 45 but the front may be too tight. I...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Rode 16 mi today with the 40 mm Tracers still at 30 psi front and rear. Really liked the added comfort and sure-footed handling on the 3 mi of bumpy sandy hardpack. Especially good crossing the deeper sand pockets. The 30 psi also seemed plenty fast enough on the 13 mi of rolling Coast Highway...

Ditto — very, very handy. This capability alone is a good argument for an electic mini-pump. When I shopped for hand pumps with gauges a while back, couldn't find any I was willing to carry. Thanks for the calculator links and preferred pressures for your various bikes. How did you resolve...

For the last 3 weeks, our greenbelt ponds have had a special visitor — by far, the biggest great blue heron I've ever seen. Posted this when I first spotted him. What a majestic creature! Over this time, the heron's become more comfortable with passing foot traffic. Maybe too comfortable...

Starting to experiment with Tracer tire pressures. The sidewalls say 30-65 psi. First try was 40 psi, where I usually ran my 38 mm Pathfinders. The 40 mm Tracers were noticeably cushier on all surfaces and definitely grabbier — especially on dirt. As predicted by drum tests at...
