    The transition

There is a number for everybody where owning their truck will no longer be worth it or affordable. That number is different for different people, obviously. My own view is that this crisis will reach and wildly surpass that number for many people. I've spoken to people who have some...

    The transition

Just a historical perspective. Pre-1979 Iran provided about 5 percent of the crude oil the US consumed. After that was cut off gas prices at the pump doubled and didn't really recover (they never recovered completely) until the Oil Glut of 1984. We haven't quite doubled prices at the pump...

    The transition

Why do you think fuel prices will be high for only a few months? Even if everything stopped today and went perfectly from this moment onwards we'd probably be looking at a major fuel supply crunch for at least another year. And also the longer the system is disrupted the longer it is going to...

    The transition

I think the story in 2026 is going to be a lot of pickup truck owners rethinking their life choices.

    The transition

Except that it probably is more like $300 or $400 per month for fuel at these prices and that big truck fuel economy. Also people in car-centric places and rural areas drive more miles per year than the average so those numbers are even larger.

    The transition

Don't worry, I think it is safe to expect fuel prices in the states will reach those levels in the next few months. There is an interesting political overlap on this mess. On the average, more car-dependent areas of the United States tend to vote Republican and less car-dependent areas tend to...

Anyone converted their Turbo Vado to tubeless tires?

I've been running totally tubeless here since 2023. And in that time I have had quite a few flats. But in no case did I need to remove the wheel from the bike or install a tube. Sidewall tears with modern tires under most riding conditions are vanishingly rare in practice. The only one I...

    The transition

By the time you leave it will probably be twice that even in Iowa.

    The transition

Regular Unleaded is now over $6 per gallon in the Seattle area. My feeling on this is that folks have had decades to absorb the fact that if we are running on fossil fuels, we are running on borrowed time. Too few people were proactive and now we have a mess. The best way for people to learn...

    The transition

Yes, I haven't financed a car in thirty years but right now I reckon that locking in a low interest rate I will be paying the loan off with US Dollars Light.

Future of Drivetrains, No Gears, No Chain.

You can spread FUD. I'm saving $300 per month with an EV and I'll keep enjoying that. Just don't ever complain to me about fuel prices. Because I'll laugh at you.

    Rohloff or not?

Other tips about the OCBR that might help for trip planning: Almost all of the state parks with camping have excellent hiker/biker sites. Some of those hiker/biker sites have luxury features like raccoon-safe lockers with outlets in them. In any event charging e-bikes in state parks is...

    Rohloff or not?

I don't think there is yet a thru-axle version of a rohloff. Most I have seen use QR and a dropout. Usually with a funky mechanism to maintain chain/belt tension. The really good designs maintain that tension even if you remove and replace the wheel.

    Rohloff or not?

I've made the trip you are discussing multiple times since 2018 with various rohloff and belt drive bikes. Never had an issue. If you are nervous about the belts I'd suggest replacing them before the start of the trip. Or have a friend at home who can next day them to you. So in worst case...

    Rohloff or not?

Actually the only issue is that you have to remove the mechanism that translates cable pulls into shifts. It is much easier if you shift into 1 before removing the wheel.

California Assembly member proposes driver's license for e-bikes

That is a load of horse poop. In a world where corrupt jack booted goons are disappearing people in the middle of the night, to conflate "totalitarianism" with "e-bike regulations" is obscene. By making such foolish statements you are trivializing the real suffering and fear that too many...

California Assembly member proposes driver's license for e-bikes

Just to be clear, this thread was about AB 530. Which died in committee as of February 2024. This is a zombie thread.

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

I find the whole age verification moral panic to be hilarious. And watching people who don't have a clue and no ability to think things through make a mess of things. It seems that a lot of the "age verification" laws missed the boat and by implication require age verification of systems with...

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

It is wild to me in a world where usually you have to talk fast and negotiate to get a bike shop to work on a basic pedal assist e-bike that anyone would think they'd get any help with a monster like that.

Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

So we shouldn't have *any* laws at all? How would that work. Posts like these demonstrate eloquently why our society is so broken. It isn't because of entitled kids, either.
