Still searching for the perfect ultra-light ebike kit for road bikes — here’s the idea in my head

Do people actually ride bikes with front motors? They always seemed an odd throwback & a bit dangerous with the weight positioned there. Feels odd the power not coming through the pedals. But to each their own. And obviously the market for lightweight e road bikes will be different to front hub...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm finding this an extraordinary achievement. 18.7lb is crazy light for motor, battery & wiring.

Lightweight and compact TQ ebike drive could make eRoad bikes ‘actually’ good

Yes, been discussing this here: https://forums.electricbikereview.com/threads/another-new-tq-motor-hpr40.57935/page-3#post-686858

New Raleigh (UK) One smart e-bike

The Dutch angle makes sense looking at the frame design, this new bike has the whiff of the late not so great (and recently resurrected?) Van Moof. Or the Belgian rival (still going strong) Cowboy bikes. Single speed for flat Dutch roads? Not sure how that will go down on this hilly Island.

New Raleigh (UK) One smart e-bike

Most batteries fit in the downtube these days. Rare to see an external battery. Most major brands have done this for a number of years. Some are removable, some are not. Plus the batteries they use last a lot longer than just two/three years. My Vado SL battery is still in very good health...

Still searching for the perfect ultra-light ebike kit for road bikes — here’s the idea in my head

No need to wait. No need for small hub motor anymore either. The new TQ40 mid drive just released at Eurobike last week, is already on a Canyon Endurace ONfly weighing just over 21lbs. Full name the Endurace ONfly SUB 10 (for under 10kg). 40nm, 290wh battery...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Fascinating about your Competition! And great you still have it and ride it. When I got mine I was mid teens and racing as a junior in Ireland. It was second hand from a fellow club cyclist who'd saved up and imported an amazing Tommasini frame from Italy, Columbus tubing, chrome lugs...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Very good points! Also thumbs up for your Raleigh Competition- I had one as my winter training bike mid 80s. Remember it clearly, dull grey and silver colour, 501 tubing, but a tough workhorse, it lasted years. No idea what happened to it.

Nice! Challenge (Italian?) used to make tubs, dunno if they still do. How wide are those bad boys- 19 or 20mm?!! How times have changed.

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Yes that little battery display at the end of the drops was a surprise! It needs more road testing for sure. Efficiency of motor & battery to see real world battery range for instance. And I'm curious about potential overheating on sustained climbs. The also new TQ60 has cooling fins...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Yes one advantage of the narrow twisty lanes I ride is shelter from the wind. When I raced, and lived in a flatter area, on long winter training rides against the bitter cold and gusting wind I used to grumble to myself that at least the feckin' hills ended, the wind felt eternal.

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

It is fun to think about! I think of it as a non assist ceiling, that moment on a hill where you need to hit assist because the weight of the bike makes it sluggish, not fun to ride. I once rode the same few miles of rolling hills on my Vado SL (38lbs+) and the following day on my my Salsa Vaya...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Couple of other things on the Canyon, 35mm tyre clearance and surprisingly it comes with 180mm brake rotors, not 160 or 140. This issue was discussed here recently and I'd found myself, that on the steep descents around me that there was much better modulation with 180 rotors over 160 and my...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Coming back to the subject at hand not Fazua or Trek but Canyon, Ridley & this new lightweight TQ40 motor. Just been looking up the new Canyon Endurace ONfly specs. The cheapest model comes in at £4,100 weighs 26lbs/12kg has same carbon F&F, 105 groupset, DT Swiss hubs and rims. It takes...

    Another new TQ motor: hpr40

Just seen the new gravel bike from Ridley you mentioned, lovely. The Canyon looks good too. But that weight; 22lbs/10Kg with a 290wh battery and 40nm torque. That hits the sweet spot for sure. Plus a RE for longer rides. 22 pounds. My Salsa Vaya all steel road bike is 27 lbs ffs. Shoddy Dave...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Curious. If this is new desert terrain for Jeremy & if is off-road terrain, to predict battery usage how will the bike computer plan for desert changes in elevation and wind conditions? And above all gradient. To paraphrase Frank Herbert and his Bene Gesserit "Gradient is the Battery Killer"...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

Fair point. I just count those blue little bars and guess the range left based on experience. Without the range extender I'll get over 30 miles with 3000ft+ elevation with 15-25% gradients. On the Solstice last Saturday I did 25 mile loop and had 28% left with 3009ft, gorgeous sunny day, hitting...

Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

I don't have the engineering brain for all that data, particularly while on the ride. I like it simple so my head isn't staring down at the bars. I set the Specialized app running & stick the phone in the front bag or a pocket. I have the UK Ordnance Survey map app on my phone as well so I can...
