I've read that aluminum chainrings wear out much faster than steel but all the aftermarket chainrings I see are aluminum. Point taken on the guard just protecting your pants. I've not had any issues with the chain dropping and I do think the narrow/wide chainrings help

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the rule of thumb. Actually I didn't expect going to a larger chain ring would be a complicated affair whatsoever.

How many links did you need to add to the chain?

Agreed. I did see an outer guard on amazon but it says it's for 42-58 teeth. It must be very tall and then there's the chain stay clearance issue. Will the stock guard work to protect the chain from coming off with a larger chainring? There's a lot of searching to try and find compatible parts...

I do see that aftermarket chain ring guards are sold but again the issue of which one, what size. etc. Good point on the triple chain rings and yes, my current guard would be useless with a larger sprocket. I don't want to run the sprocket naked, in fact I'd prefer inner AND outer guards

The OEM chaingring comes with an outside guard, I don't know if it can be used with a new chainring. It might be part of the sprocket I don't know. Also I plan on going up 4 teeth and wonder if there's a rule of thumb for increasing chain length when going to a new chainring.

Any updates on this? I have a Rize RX that came with 44T chainring and I'd like to go up to 48. Yeah I'm still gaining weight on my ebike. I blame the bafang ultra motor. I put it in the highest level of assist and don't have to work at all, even up steep hills.

I did hear back from Rize and they said "the motorX tires will fit"... It's MotoX not "motor" X but yes, I've also read that usually there is no problem fitting a tire that says for crotched rims only regardless of what kind of rims you have. I still think rize was shooting from the hip but oh well

Yep, at that point I'd be looking for a battery rebuilder although it's tempting to buy another in frame battery now but too much $$$$

UPDATE: After owning the bike for 2 weeks, I'm not getting the second battery. I can easily do 30 miles w/o working hard at all and have some battery capacity left over and even when we take the bikes to our favorite bike paths, we don't go further than 30mi. which for us is at least a 3 hour ride.
