Front page LA Times today regarding Ebikes

Say what you will about our 1 class system - and I've ranted and advocated plenty about the speed limits, trust me - it keeps it simple. There's no confusion or debate about MUP or trail access. Ebike sales are through the roof here in Australia, so people are amazingly surviving with our...

How long do Giant batteries live?

Could be fine but 4 years is getting on to middle age for an ebike. I purchased a used 4 year old ebike a few years back. Battery was at 80% health. It degraded quickly after that. What did that bike in was the lack of dealer support with a motor issue that cropped up 12 months into ownership...

new to everything- momentum vida e plus step through

The Vida is 53 lbs (source: https://www.theproscloset.com/products/2021-momentum-vida-e-500-lds-20mph-s-red-1). The cheaper, weaker hub motor Momentum Voya is closer to 40 lbs so maybe that was what you had in mind? Anyway, you can lose about 12 lbs per bike by removing the battery before...

new to everything- momentum vida e plus step through

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the purchases. I think the Vida's should be very easy bikes to live with: internal gears, punchy motor that belies it's specs, good sized battery for 30 - 50 mile range. The price sounds good and you've got the backing of a very large dealer network...

Re-using old Tannus Armour inserts in new Johnny Watts tires?

Had 2 years of Tannus in one set of tyres (Marathon, no flats) before reusing them in a new set of tyres (G-Ones) . The foam was pretty flattened so wasn't sure how it would perform. A year on I converted those tyres to tubeless and the rear tyre spurted sealant from about three holes I hadn't...

    Over50's Tern GSD Chronicles - Gen 1 and Gen 2 R14

I had a (brief) test ride at a shop a few months back, alongside a 02Feel with an EP8 and a Bafang-equipped Yuba. The Tern was absolutely sublime to ride, particularly noticeable back to back with the other two. Easy to maneuver, powerful, smartly designed. I liked it a lot. I suspect we'll end...

Anyone else go tubeless on their allant?

Nice! I saw a 10% bump in range after going tubeless. That was from the heavy Marathon/Tannus combo to lighter Pathfinders. Unexpected but appreciated. I thought it was my imagination at first. Let's me squeeze an extra commute trip into a charging cycle.

Metric/Imperial Centuries? Poll, and your experience.

Haha, one of those was me. I love reading accounts of other peoples century rides here but don't foresee it in my tea leaves. Work and family mean my discretionary time is limited. If I get a rare 5 hour block to myself I'd much rather make a trek to one of the regions mtb parks for a couple of...

Tubeless Options for Allant+ within Bosch Circumference Range

That's one serious commuter machine @fooferdoggie! Love the tan sidewalls. What are you running for bar ends?

    Quality first but dollars count!

That's a very subjective question. In this thread you've got views from DIYers, professional builders, hobbyists and enthusiasts. Everyone will have a different answer. You're pretty much getting what you pay for across the eBike spectrum. Componetry costs what it costs. As prices rise the law...

Informal MTB motor failure rate poll

Out of idle curiosity I recently took a straw poll in my local eMTB Facebook group on motor reliability. My SUMPRODUCT math might be a bit shaky but I average the failure rate across all the motor brands at 8.5%. It was a small sample of about 65 votes, so I won't publish brand-specific...

For less dollars than your Ultimate T9 is this an option? https://flyridesusa.com/products/gazelle-medeo-t10-mid-step?variant=41160482357446 Punchier motor than the two you listed and good quality specs, if you don't mind the drivetrain servicing. On an ebike that usually involves a basic wipe...

    Thoughts Of An Experienced E-Biker

Yes! An easy fact to forget in our preoccupation with all things motorised and electronic. I get surprised (and a little relieved) anew every time I switch the assist off riding with non-motorised friends and family - it's still a pushbike! With some optional assist. I'll always value an ebike...

    Quality first but dollars count!

You've test ridden them - how did they feel on more challenging inclines? The Active Line is a quiet and economical motor but be prepared to contribute significantly more leg power to zoom up hills.

    Range experience?

Interesting thread, if slightly meaningless as a comparison due to all the variables. I've ridden 7110km in 97 battery cycles, with a current reported battery health of 96%. Back of napkin calculation gives me 6.6wh per km (10.6wh per mi for those using the old system). Mainly flat with about...

    2018 Giant Dirt E+ Pro

Let us know! I'll be looking into switching to linkglide when my current drivetrain needs replacement. Mid drive may have its pitfalls, but it sure beats trying to mtb on a hub motor...

    Quality first but dollars count!

I hear you - I'm all for real world user experience. I've tried to create long term user threads on a couple of occasions here but they usually fizzle out pretty quick. This is a few years old now but offers some insight into time between failure rates...

    Quality first but dollars count!

Ebikes don't last 20 years. As @TrevorB said you'll be doing well to get 5-10 years. In that time I'd hope a whole new generation of bike emerges anyway. You want to buy from a LBS, which I think is smart for a (more) hassle free experience. Here's a way to cull down your list of options real...

Front page LA Times today regarding Ebikes

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Same story we're hearing in cities all over the place. The eternal dance between consumer trends, infrastructure and regulation. My two takeaways: wear a helmet and ride to conditions.
