If the pads and pistons did actually float, they wouldn't rub the disc and we wouldn't be having this chat. Is that not correct? I know if my pads and pistons were floating, they would be a set it and forget it.

Your definition of self centering and mine are not the same. I am referring either to a floating caliper or disc. The cone washers allow for machining or lack of machining tolerances.

Someday when they get tired of improving everything else and can’t figure out how to make sales, they’ll get around to improving the disc brake system with a self centering pad.

His setup is on a splined hub which holds the gears. If for some reason there is a locknut inside the hub holding the collar on then it is not going to budge. That would mean something on the other side must come off to slide the axle out.

Maybe there is a tool to hold the outer hub and the collar and axle unscrew as a unit?

I look at the ebike market as similar to the automobile. In it's infancy. Somewhere, somehow, hot rodding ebikes for more power, speed, whatever, I would expect to take place. And maybe it already is, I just don't see it. I think bigger hub motors as replacements would be a start.
