2016 Turbo X: First week (and beyond) commuting impressions

Had another spoke break about two weeks ago. This time there was nothing on the trail that could have caused it to break, and the trail was smooth...just a "ping!" and I knew what had happened. The bike shop (Fresh Bikes, Arlington) service manager is pleasant and responsive. His suggestion was...

Wow...Don't put away your regular bike.

@Douglas Ruby - Very cool vintage bike you have. I have a Bianchi Veloce steel bike with carbon fork (last year the bikes were made in Italy) with the Campy Veloce groupo. Compared to the Domane the Veloce is even more comfortable in the compliant springy way that only steel bikes feel. I...

Wow...Don't put away your regular bike.

And it has been my understanding....the whole partial charge cycles principal applies to my phone, my rechargeable lights, etc. etc....all stuff I've owned for a lot longer than the Turbo. Here's a simpler explanation. If I'm riding my Domane I won't later be charging my Turbo. :)

Wow...Don't put away your regular bike.

I understand the principles of charging and battery life. Partial charges eventually add up to full charges. I meant to convey that if I want a strength workout I'll ride the Domane, and save the useful life of my battery, regardless of the myriad of factors that can increase or decrease it's...

Wow...Don't put away your regular bike.

Over the weekend I experienced the strange feeling of getting back on my 2015 Trek Domane 4.5, a mid-level carbon bike with mostly Ultegra components. It felt like I was riding in sand with a brake dragging at some point in the rotation of the rear wheel. I got off the bike and checked it...

    Bike Stand Legs

Great tip..I've been looking for something like this for the same reason (protecting the floor where I work).

What size Turbo for 5'6" male?

Check out my avatar and notice the higher bars on the X. Due to the suspension fork and slightly modified frame geometry the X inherently has a more upright riding position. I'll be 52 in July and have two fused vertebrae in my neck. I try to be very conscious of my riding posture - rotate my...

    GPS tracking

The Apple watch idea is good, and it got me to thinking about some devices I've researched for my autistic 5 year-old son. The child's location can be monitored remotely in an app (I can also turn on a mic to hear his surroundings, and a speaker to talk to him). Location parameters can be set to...

2016 Turbo X: First week (and beyond) commuting impressions

When I took the bike it to have the broken spoke replaced the tech told me he updated the firmware as well. Maybe it wasn't the latest update. Or he didn't really do it...or I'm doing something that is resetting it. Based on number of trips to work I have at least 800 miles on the bike.

2016 Turbo X: First week (and beyond) commuting impressions

After riding the bike to work four days this week, on Friday the odometer reset itself again. Wondering if I'm accidentally resetting it.

Can't figure out how to navigate to street address in Mission Control

I have the same question. I like the app overall, but it needs to be refined a bit. It has great potential. Looking forward to improvements.

How many gears do you use?

All. I ride predominantly in ECO 50 and occasionally in ECO 60 as I near work so I start to cool down. Starting in low gears reduces the current draw at the motor and extends range. I always use the lowest gear to climb steeper hills. Slow speed and too tall a gear will lead to overheating the...

    GPS tracking

Love that little phone idea. I sense there will soon be stealthy aftermarket GPS tracking accessories available.

Disc brake upgrade - Shimano XT

The Shimano M506 brakes that come on the 2016 X are fantastic...so much so that I see no reason to replace them...except with another set of affordable M506 brakes. Do a little research - they are recognized as THE best bang for the buck.

2016 Turbo X: First week (and beyond) commuting impressions

AH - You are going to love the Turbo X. It makes for a smooth ride. If you bought it in Arlington, you got it from Freshbikes. David Polk is an excellent e-bike mechanic, and e-bike enthusiast. I don't miss the headlight. Putting a bright flashing "to be seen" light on the bars, and a bright...

    GPS tracking

I have an old iphone 4 that I can track using Find My phone on my iphone 6. I'm toying with how I can utilize this. I also have Manything app installed...so I can watch/listen to who approaches the bike. Currently I'm using the iphone 4 and Manything app as a baby monitor.

What size Turbo for 5'6" male?

I have a small X. I'm 5'7 and the small was the only one I could stand over (short legs) with clearance. You lose the cool swooping top tube...but fit is way more important than looks. I think I need to get a slightly longer stem to give me just a little bit more open cockpit (don't try to...

2016 Turbo X: First week (and beyond) commuting impressions

David Polk, the extremely knowledgeable and experienced e-bike mechanic at Freshbikes (Arlington, VA) replaced the broken spoke, trued the wheel, and updated the firmware to fix the random odometer resetting and other small issues. No charge. I was surprised as a broken spoke is kinda like a...

2016 Turbo X: First week (and beyond) commuting impressions

Well...first temporary setback. On the ride home today, just about 3 miles from home and under tree canopy, my front wheel flipped up a stick and it bounced into my rear wheel spokes. I heard the combined snap of twig and spoke. So..I bought my bike at Fresh Bikes in Arlington and they talked me...
