Optibike 1100R Commuting Data, Summer 2012

So the battery is getting on 4 years old? How far can you get on fast mode, 15-18mi? Does it kick into the flashing red light? That is the battery voltage hitting a low limit and going into Safe mode to allow 200W and limp home. If you recycle power on the fly, it comes back up, as I expect...

    Value Conversion Batteries

A 36v lithium should be 42v MAX! 41v means it is easy on the battery and doesn't overcharge . I think your battery is likely weak due to age. I would open up the charger and look for a small potentiometer and tweet up the voltage to 41.5-8. That will get a little more range.

Optibike 1100R Commuting Data, Summer 2012

Hi Robert , I didn't do the CA on the R11 because I only had it for the 90 days and sent it back. If I kept it, I would have. do you have an R11?

I received an email from Optibike yesterday. Here are a few of their upgrades for 2016: New! Bigger Batteries for 2016 Batteries for 2016 are now 12% larger in the Allroad and R Series. That means 12% longer range. M7, Helia, R8, R8HD are now 37 volt 29 amp hrs (up from 26 amp hrs) R11 is...

    48v Falco 750Hx ??

You have to remember that it's NOT a problem with the Temp Sensor in that it is doing what it was designed to do: Protect the motor. At level 5, a fresh battery can put out 30A >> 1080 W at 36V. The 500HX is rated for 500W, so running it hard SHOULD eventually hit the threashold temperature...

Hey Group, I got my new Pioneer Allroad today.

I know the R8 motors use oil cooling to support the high power density of the MBB. Here is a new oil technology to consider for thermal performance. http://www.ebikes.ca/news/statorade-experiment/

Hey Group, I got my new Pioneer Allroad today.

Opti-Austen, For the Opti-purist side of me, I'd like to know if the overseas build for the Pioneer/City and the new carbon, are those motors built under the Optibike MBB patent that Jim has? I thought I read somewhere that those bikes do use the patent rights??

Hey Group, I got my new Pioneer Allroad today.

Jack, Optibike is notoriously late.... no excuses, they are very small... They moved operations from being in Boulder to Jim's residence outside of town. I have owned and ridden an Opti 5 years. Don't have one now. I'm interested to get back on one, after a time with ddhubs. They are...

    33 lb Carbon Opti

Allroad, From my understanding and research, the Opti MBB is indeed a different design than a Bosch, Yamaha, Impulse, Panasonic and these are larger because reduction gearing requires a physical offset from the motor axis. MBB windings "surround" the axel, spin around 2400rpms, and step down...

Best bike for 33 mile commute

Ravi, That is very ambitious! Remember, Troy Rank at 4400 had zero help, ie trailer car and had carry all his gear, tools, etc or get help at LBS'. I really admire his accomplishment in 30 days and wish you the best in overcomingit! DR

    33 lb Carbon Opti

People may disagree, but if Opti is importing bikes with motors built from their patent and licensed to the company, I am ok with that business model. It is still primarily their design. They are also supporting the warranty. Folks should still consider the overall quality of the bike. That...

Larry Pizzi of EBCC discusses Electric Bike Laws and Classes at Interbike

Class 2 (throttle only bike) don't require pedaling ei 1. Class 2 should be Throttle + PAS optional 2. "I don't think PAS 28 mph is considered safe", pish posh. I assume you think a car can't go 80 mph safely either? It has been said many times, ALL riders need to be cautious on pathways...

Larry Pizzi of EBCC discusses Electric Bike Laws and Classes at Interbike

KB, Yes, most urban pathways will be used by the masses and present multiple safety concerns. Ebikers AND regular bikers need restraint, not prohibition. As a nation, we can make this work. What is more fair and safe: Expect an ebike rider to ride 20mph or less, safely on a path, at the...

    What's the Scorecard on Mid-drive?

I use to run an 11-32 and 11-34 9 speed freewheel cassette on an Optibike 800W mid drive. That had a lot of torque and would wear the chain and cogs. A good quality chain and cassette will be fine. For higher torque MD's, plan on changing the chain yearly, and cassette 1-2 years depending on...

How do you enable the "off-road" speed?

Susan, Mine use to do that until I got a firmware upgrade. That is more involved technically, but can be done with a download from Falco. The latest program will keep your settings. Maybe call Falco and see if they have an easy fix. I no longer use the wireless console, battery issues...
