A Tale of Two Cities and Two Bikes

I think the Rohloff is a great hub and if you are comfortable with a derailleur in a hilly urban settings you would love the Rohloff. From my experience, with both the Rohloff and NuVinci in city riding, there is no comparison the NuVinci is the better transmission. What is not pleasurable...

Discussion: E-bike touring and travel section?

On our trip through the central coast we did rent a minivan but only to have day trips from each location we stayed for the night. It was an real chore loading and unloading the bikes daily. Next time we’ll try your method and rent for the return leg.

Discussion: E-bike touring and travel section?

I think it is a great idea to have touring ebike section. I follow some touring and gravel bike you tubes but none address the obstacles ebike riders address. The big issue is, from my experience, we have to plan a loop or round trip. Last month we rode from Santa Cruz to Monterrey and would...

Who spent a lot on their E-bike? Was it worth it?

As said above this thread does amplify the question we all hear “how much did it cost”. It is in the same category as “what do you do?” Maybe i’m misinformed but this seems to be a macho American greeting based on a consumerist/capitalist culture. I replied to this thread in a similar way as...

A Tale of Two Cities and Two Bikes

It is difficult returning to Pittsburgh. But we have one kid and a 97 year old mother to spend time with during our PGH months. Another Santa Cruz disadvantage is the California taxes along with the summer chaos with twice the population.

A Tale of Two Cities and Two Bikes

A sidebar: Monday we returned riding in Pittsburgh, a city that is trying really hard to reinvent itself, but under the surface it is still an industrial northeast city. So fresh from Santa Cruz, a California beach surf city where recreational marijuana is legal, we had both shocking and...

A Tale of Two Cities and Two Bikes

My wife and I split our time between Santa Cruz, California in the winter and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the other seasons. In Pittsburgh we work to have a low carbon footprint and use our ebikes to run errands. The ebike of choice is the Nevo NuVinci with the GX motor. What a well mannered...

    Rohloff E-14, Gear Freewheeling

Agree it is a learning process and I understand the system limitations and felt comfortable with gear shifting at appropriate times. But this hub has failed. I recalibrated the hub a few times with some success but the problem continues to grow. I have both the latest firmware for the hub and...

    Rohloff E-14, Gear Freewheeling

I’m not sure if I have ever felt as unsafe on a bicycle as I do on my Bosch Performance CX/Rohloff E-14 ebike. A little history: For the first 400 miles the E-14 powertrain worked well, although stiff. Since then there had been a series of malfunctions that has brought to the surface the warts...

Thule Easyfold XT2 - A good rack for ebikes and the best one if you have fenders

Agree, I use two straps that greatly reduces the downward load on the hitch.

Thule Easyfold XT2 - A good rack for ebikes and the best one if you have fenders

We miss our Thule EasyFold, back in Pittsburgh, as we travel to Southern California to witness the Super Bloom. It’s replacement is a rented Dodge minivan. The van fit is challenging, both bikes’ front wheels and fenders have to be removed. Photo of Mount Figuera full of spring wildflowers near...

Customizing a New Bike - Riese & Muller Homage Rohloff HS

Chris, the Hexlox front axle for Suntour you supplied works great and elimates carrying a cable to secure the front wheel.

Show us pictures of where you ride your ebikes!

Paso Robles, California. 78F about 10 degrees warmer than the coast. This is the Central Valley region where the film Sideways was shoot.

    Hitch Mount Bike Rack

I have the Thule Easyfold and it works with two 60 # bikes. It is quite light and fits nicely into the car’s trunk. The only disadvantage is when the bikes are not in the rack it does not fold flush to the car. Without bikes attached it looks like an attached wheelchair.

    Nuvinci/Rohloff

Hi Dave, I also have both a bike with the Nuvinci and one with the Rohloff E-14 speedhub. There is no doubt the Rohloff is a superior gear set. Both bikes have the CX motor so torque is not an issue when you find yourself in the wrong gear at the wrong time. If rails to trails is where you spend...

Off-road hill climbing ability mid-drive vs rear hub

They are enforced in California but in West Virginia i’m sure it’s a nonissue

What are your favorite Rohloff gears

The ideal situation is the eMTB and Sport mode could be user programmable.

What are your favorite Rohloff gears

So we seem to be in agreement on gear selection. Yes 7 is noisy, Alaskan and others say it will smooth out in time.

What are your favorite Rohloff gears

It seems like the Speed motor is a better match, than the CX, with the Rohloff gear range. Relating to the CX eMTB mode vs a straight sport mode. From my experience, on both the Rohloff and NuVinci, the eMTB is an overreach for riders using gravel or fire roads. It’s not as if we are heavily...
