    Bike Selection. Please read!

Ravi, what kind of maintenance challenges did you have on your 5K ride? Did you do it all on one bike?

    Bike Selection. Please read!

Would there be a reason to ride powered all the time? If you are sensible with the e-assistance and use leg power when boost isn't necessary, you should be able to travel beyond 50 miles per charge. Gearless hubs tend to cog/drag when the power is off, so focus your search on geared-hub and...

HUB vs MID DRIVE - how can I compare?

To the OP and others ready to jump into the eBike game….. Roads generally aren’t all flat and straight. Earlier in this thread I stated that “You will work harder riding a 500 watt hub bike than a 350 watt mid-drive.” Electric motors need to spin, laboring a motor at low rpm will generate...

HUB vs MID DRIVE - how can I compare?

Just like that. Especially if the road goes 'up'.

HUB vs MID DRIVE - how can I compare?

You are asking for an outline of quite a lot of data, and with a bottom line based upon many variables. Simple answer: You will work harder riding a 500 watt hub bike than a 350 watt mid-drive. Spend some time reading our host's reviews and watching his videos. It's all good.

If you had $3K burning a whole in your pocket?

    > the best bang for your buck is a SmartMotion Pacer. Screaming fast,..... A 500w geared-hub motor can be "screaming fast"? It's as fast as a 500w motor, which isn't. The way mid-drive technology is evolving, hubs are beginning to appear like old school dinosaurs.

Will 2018 be a "Big Year" for eBikes?

Although still a small market in North America, eBikes are becoming recognized by consumers and within the bicycle industry. While traditional pedal bike sales are apparently declining, eBike sales are increasing. Yup, it’s happening. :) Interbike 2017 eBike interest...

Who is , or will be , the Dell of ebikes ?

So, we expand bikeways and MUPS. Imagine what those would be like if the plan succeeds and people actually do get out of their cars and ride bicycles. Not a pretty picture, and it would sure take away the fun. ;- ) Seriously, it's a conundrum. https://tinyurl.com/ycvz9l2z

Must I buy a new car for my hitch/rack/bikes?

Fwiw.... I've already mentioned this to Mark23, but for others who might benefit I will repeat. If your vehicle has fold-down rear seats, there is a strong possibility that you can carry your ebike inside the cab. Yes, until you get familiar with removing the front wheel it might be a hassle...

Who is , or will be , the Dell of ebikes ?

If by "e-drive" you mean the STEPS, I would not bet on that. We will know for sure soon enough, but from what I've read the Shimano units will continue on Trek's 2018 US models. Both the Bosch and Shimano systems are viable power plants and having a Bosch over a Shimano is not stepping up the...

Charging after "each and every use"?

Current opinion from Grin Technologies and the techies at Endless Sphere says that a lithium battery is most healthy if kept between 80% full charge and 20% minimum charge. Recharging a battery to peak capacity after every ride and then not immediately using it is not a good thing. Some eBike...

Who is , or will be , the Dell of ebikes ?

Behemoth companies let small companies do the groundwork and pay the dues. Once the market has been established they step in and vaporize the little guys. Brands like Juiced and Rad, and dozens of others currently visible, are just worker ants in the game. Giant in Taiwan is a major bicycle...

    Rear Hub in 2017 ?

    > Seems like more and more companies are moving to mid drives . It appears that the big players in the bike industry have definitely chosen mids over hubs. Even the major hub builder, Bafang, has developed and is producing a mid-drive. Mids have the advantage of better gearing which makes...

    Maximize battery: Spin or Mash?

Load on an electric motor measurably increases draw. To get the best range out of a battery charge, don't lug the motor. Spinning at a high cadence will reduce draw, but if you are going to do that why have an eBike? Just 'assist the motor' enough to keep it working easy.

Is there any reason for me to have a higher volt/watt motor?

If you upgraded to Clean Republic’s 350-watt 36-volt Horizon system you would get their frame-mounted battery with LED meter. Simple hub systems like their Hill Topper lack battery info, so people tend to recharge too frequently. The felt power from the 350 compared to the 250 will be a...
