2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I did 21 miles on the roads around my house. I see a few fields of corn had been picked but didn’t see any actually working. It’s a little early and if the moisture content of the corn is too high they have to pay to dry it.

Winter is coming: how do I protect the battery?

I’d bring it inside. If you’re worried about a fire hazard store it in some kind of fire box.

2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I rode 20 miles today. I went to a couple of car dealers just to look at them and see how stupid high prices are. We got lucky and bought newer vehicles and a small diesel tractor before Covid hit. Prices are high but have come down some. A couple of pictures of a street project I did the...

2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I did 13 miles today, I rode to the nearby town of Colchester. The picture is where a church used to stand. It had been in private ownership for several years and was falling apart. A nearby business bought it and had it torn down.

Old man, new bike, massive hills, lesson learned

I’ve been on hills that I lost my momentum on a couldn’t make it up. You have to stay ahead of it so to speak and shift down early and learn when to pedal like a madman.

I rode 24 miles on the roads near our house today. I rode down a stretch of gravel to take a look at this church. Small church is good shape. It almost looks like someone’s house but I think it’s still a church. It seems to be a common thing to mount the old church bell for display.

Need Recommendation For A Lift To Work On Our Two Heavy Ebikes

In my picture above I hook mine to a bike stand after I hoist it up by ropes. I tried skipping the bike stand once but it just swung around too much. I also took the hoist ropes off once but it helped keep the front handle bars from swinging around.

Need Recommendation For A Lift To Work On Our Two Heavy Ebikes

I use a low dollar rope and pulley system. Not a great picture but it hooks on the handlebars and the back of the seat, pull it up in the air and secure it to the bike stand. This setup is designed for bikes but you need and overhead ceiling to mount it to.

Salzmann 3M Spoke Reflectors for Bicycles

Growing up reflectors in the spoke were mandatory. These days I don’t see them because all the tires have a reflector stripe around them.

I briefly rode my brother in law’s Lectric and I think the model is XPress 750. It’s a hub drive, has a throttle, lots of power and torque sensing. He had it set for level 3 and I never touched the throttle. One rotation of the crank and it felt like I was going 15 mph. I turned it down to...

We rode 24 miles on the Sangamon Valley Trail today in Springfield. Nice trail, all paved and still pretty smooth. It runs along the west side of Springfield Illinois. It has a bridge over the Sangamon River. The last picture is where it ends and will be extended some day maybe.

"Why Is My Elevation Gain Report Always Wrong?" (Answered Once And For Good)

I had to Google if smart phones have a barometer built in, I would have guessed they didn’t. Turns out they do at least Apple phones do. If the barometric pressure remains steady during your ride it might be close on your elevation gain. Of course this is never perfect and the barometric...

Trek Domane+ SLR 7 uneven weight distribution?

I own a Trek Verve and I would say mine is more tail heavy. You are talking about 1 pound and unless that one pound is all at the front of the bike I’d say it shouldn’t affect the balance. I looked up the specs on Trek’s website and they show the 7 being a little over a half pound less than...

2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I rode to a nearby state park called Argyle. It has a lake and a road around the lake that is very curvy and has some steep hills. I ended up with about 18 miles and just under 1100 feet of elevation gain, most of that in the 5 miles around the lake. A few pictures of the lake and the road...

Share a recent frustrating experience that made you want to switch bikes!

So far I’ve not wrecked. I was riding on a very loose gravel road and lost it. I staggered around after the bike went down, I probably looked like a drunk, I said some bad words, but never fell down. There are some times I wish I had a bike with more power so I could ride faster and further...

2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I rode 27 miles today, back to riding the roads around my house. I rode by the John Deere dealer and a scare crow I assume is up for Halloween. It’s about 10 feet tall.
