    Gear Inches

Gear inches is determined by (Front chain teeth/Rear chain teeth)*wheel size this will give you the distance traveled in one revolution of the pedals, which is why I was confused. The 2.5/1 makes sense, so on a 15 tooth front chain it would really be equal to 37.5. The reason why I was...

    Gear Inches

Thank you, so it is then about equal to a 38 front tooth, that makes a lot more sense. Probably easier on my old, bad knees.

    Gear Inches

I'm a little confused about gear inches on some models like the Espin Reine. It has a 11-36 cassette in the rear and a 15 tooth in front which works out as a low gear of 11 inches and a high gear of 37 inches, this doesn't seem right. I usually have a low gear in the upper 20s and a high gear...

    How wrong am I?

BTW, I have a belt drive on my non electric bike and I love it since I live in a downtown area where I usually can't go more than two blocks without a stop sign or light. With a belt drive you don't need to be pedaling to shift, so if you miss a light you can down shift while you wait. Since...

    How wrong am I?

I think that hill just north of the American River on Sunrise would be a good test. I tried out a Trek Verve step thru last year as well as a high step and there was a noticeable difference in ability to climb hills in my opinion and I live in Salem, Oregon. I also test rode a Giant LaFree and...

    Can I add a throttle to my LaFree e + 1?

Using a throttle would use more battery and shorten the distance you can go with pedal assist if it was available on the LaFree. Just be patient, the more often you bike, the easier it gets. One of the things I liked about the LaFree was that it was very relaxing, not having a display telling me...

    Espin Reine

The LaFree has the same set up, but when I test rode it, it wasn't a problem. The LBS ( 60 miles away) that has the Reine doesn't have the new Sport or Flow and I really want to test ride before deciding. When I talked to them about the Sport & Flow they had tried the old versions and didn't...

    Espin Reine

Has anybody bought one, or ridden one. I would like to know your impressions if so. I was about to by a Giant LaFree until I started having knee problems and the Reine looks similar with a throttle which I might need if this knee issue continues to crop up periodically.

Got my Magnum Ui6 - includes periodic updates

Sorry to hear about you're having to sell your Magnum. I took a test ride at the Eugene Electric Bike shop on a UI6 a couple of months ago because I wanted to see how it did climbing and there is a 600 foot climb just off the bicycle/pedestrian path along the river. It climbed easily, but I felt...

    Mid drive with throttle?

You could have asked why someone thought they needed a throttle, rather than spouting your spoiled personal agenda. It's great that you don't need one-yet. But I think it is more important to get more people on bikes, rather than driving fossil fuel vehicles. If that requires some of us 'old...

    Mid drive with throttle?

Right now I'm having a severe knee problems, so now I've spent a couple thousand dollars on an ebike that I now can't use to get to work? Throttles give you options, especially if you are using it as a commuter.

Looking for a mid-drive commuter ebike under $2500

I only speak from trying out ebikes. The Trek Verve + isn't good at climbing hills in my opinion at $2.4, the Giant LaFree E+ 2 was fine at $2.0 but you need to add lights are the mids that I tried. The Magnum UI6 at $1.9 or the Magnum Metro at $2.2 and Aventon Pace 500 at $1.4 but needs fenders...

    Eco vs Eco+ confusion

I tested a 2020 LaFree E+ 2 last week using the 'auto' function and it worked great especially on hills in Portland (OR). It adjusted well to what I was doing and I felt very comfortable with it. I plan on getting one shortly.

    Bad knees and big chainring

Thank you Stefan, I guess I should have mentioned that I was trying to stay in the $1500-2000 range. The very first ebike I tried out was a used Specialized Turbo S about a year ago. It was very fun and climbed easily, but I hesitated because I didn't know much about ebikes at the time. Since...

    Bad knees and big chainring

Most electric bikes have a chainring in the 40's usually 46 or 48. I have bad knees and in my triple non electric bike I almost never use the larger chainring. I'm much more comfortable in the 28 or 38 chainring even if the gear inches are about the same. When trying out electric bikes I seem to...

    Attack angle?

And fat tires on that Bagi as well as 20".

    Attack angle?

They were 20" tires, and I've been considering a similar ebike, but I'm much more familiar with taller step over non-electric bikes. So maybe it would be better to stick with at least a 26" step over or low step ebike for my aging knees.

    Attack angle?

Court, you quite often mention attack angle when talking about tire size, could you explain that a little more fully? My brother took a spill on his Bagi folding bike when he hit a pothole, and I was wondering if this is an example of what you are talking about.
