My bikes go into the bed of the truck with a piece of thick cardboard between them. The bed has a thick rubber mat that keeps the bikes from sliding around in the turns. I purposely have bought SUVs and pickups with cargo areas that were long enough for me to put the bikes inside while leaving...
I have a non electric full suspension bike and a non electric hard tail bike. My e-bike is a Creo Turbo SL with a carbon fiber frame. The bike with it battery weighs 27 lbs and rides exactly like my non electric carbon fiber bike on the road. The difference is when there is a 10 mph or greater...
I have tried dozens of goggles that are not supposed to fog up but every single one did so in short order. I use safety goggles that fit well enough to not have air hitting my cheekbones and then going up into my eyes. The reader versions come in a range of diopters so I can read the bike Wahoo...
With my scuba diving and underwater photography my gear was in salt water for hours and then topside to be put in a rinse tank and that was a far harsher environment than any bicycle will be subjected to in the real world.
Mil specs are used to insure a contract goes to a favored vendor and...
Every independent test I have read with regard to corrosion for my ocean boats exposed to saltwater has found that WD-40 is the best at any price. It was originally developed by the U.S. Navy for marine use.
For small parts that are rusting a little clear nail polish works wonders and is easy...
Watts is a measure of the power draw of a motor. It is like saying a gas engine is a 20 gallon per hour motor. The power output for an electric motor is measured in Newton meters. So long as a motor provides 35 Nm it is going to provide sufficient power for most riders on and off the pavement.
Written by an idiot. I ride at 18 mph with my regular road bike and at 18 mph with my e-bike. The difference is that I can do this with the e-bike when I have a 15 mph headwind. I bought a Class III bike so as to not have the pedal assist cut out at 18 mph when pushing up a hill but my average...
My last pair of road bike shoes lasted 25 years and the pair they replaced I used for 20 years so I do not care about the cost only the fit. When I bought new shoes last year I had to order 7 pairs to get one pair that fit. Part of the problem is having European sizing for the UK that is...
I have been using bicycles to get around town and for long distance touring for the past 60 years. Traffic is worse and motorists are more aggressive and distracted. The auto companies and the real estate industry have maximized their profits but created cities where it is dangerous for...
Battery manufacturers tend to recommend having a battery ast 50% charge if it is not going to be used for months. Batteries are rated for XXX charge cycles and going from 20 to 100 SOC is one cycle as is going from 70 to 100 SOC. The more one does short charges to "top off" the battery the...
Tricycles with one wheel in front and two wheels in the rear are inherently dangerous and easy to flip when going downhill. OK for a parking cop to ride around at 20 MPH on level streets but not for carrying cargo.
San Francisco is not at all bike friendly. With all the on street parking and delivery trucks with large mirrors it is not a fun place for cyclists. I ride there only because it it fun racing past the cable cars going up the hills with my non e-bike.
The auto industry and oil companies have...
Change to the 14-34 cassette. I went from a 11-46 to a 11-34 with my e-bike as I was not using the larger cogs and wanted tighter spacing. In my case I also needed to change the rear deraileur. The Shimano I bought would handle up to a 34T cassette.
We got a $7500 tax credit with our 2022 plug-in hybrid Rav4 AWD SUV that we purchased this past June. It is averaging 99 mpg so far. We generate more electricity than we use with the solar panels on the roof so there is no cost for most trips of less than 44 miles overall.
Problem with most EV...
It comes down to which is going to be easier to ride. I bought two Class II bikes that weighed 70 lbs and replaced them with Class III bikes that weigh 27 lbs. With the Class III motor I get motor assist at speeds up to 18 mph and a gradual reduction at higher speeds. It is like riding a...
An e-bike is no different than a standard bike where the chainring and rear cassette can be changed to provide lower gears. Easiest usually to replace the front chainring but with a standard bike I have put a very large cog to provide a granny gear for long steep grades.
I seldom used the 3 lowest gears with my Creo and so changed to a 11-34 11 speed cassette and replaced the rear derailleur with a Shimano Ultegra designed for 11-34 cassettes. I like the tighter spacing of the gears and the bike only weighs 27 lbs so even without the motor it is not a problem...
At the heart of the problem is the increased number of older people starting to bicycle with the advent of e-bikes and many of them are clueless. Cities were long ago taken over by the auto interests with their buying up and then dismantling light rail operators across the USA. As a result both...
I bought the 1UP Super Duty Double a couple of years ago and it was the only rack available that would support two 70 lb e-bikes and that was RV rated. That is more than most racks being sold and very few are OK for use on an RV or a trailer. The Kuat Piston Pro X has less of load capacity and...
Your bike should fit with only the front wheel removed and the front forks rotated 180 degrees. I put a heavy rubber bed mat in the truck to keep the bike from sliding around with the bike so that the derailleur is furthest from the bottom. With two bikes I use a piece of thick cardboard...
