What kind of bike should I be looking for?

If you want a throttle, and want to remain legal, that limits you to a class 2 ebike, which means a speed limit of 20mph. Some class 3 ebikes (28mph pedal assist) might come with a 20mph throttle as well, but they aren't common at all. The first thing I did when I was looking at ebikes is to go...

    researching my first electric bike

If you can, you should find a local bicycle shop and test ride a class 3 ebike or two. Not many class 3 ebikes come with throttles, so having that requirement will really reduce your options, and honestly I don't think a throttle is needed on a class 3. On a class 3 ebike a throttle will only...

??? Class 2 Regulations on Throttle Usage ????

I don't see why it would be illegal, a class 2 ebike does not require you to pedal, so working pedals or not shouldn't matter at all. Now if you intentionally removed the ability to pedal I can see that being considered a moped or something. If the ability to pedal breaks, I think at that point...

    Trek Super Commuter 7 - $3599

From my understanding it could, and if it doesn't now it might in future updates. I think Bosch expected that people will try to beat the speed limit by messing with the sensors, changing gears, etc, so they implemented ways to detect modifications like that. The bike definitely has the sensors...

    Trek Super Commuter 7 - $3599

Please let me know how that works out for you. I think I read that changing the front sprocket might cause errors to happen. If its the same as my SC8, it looks at cadence and speed, and if those numbers are off it might think a sensor has gone bad and report an error.

    Trek super commuter 8

I have the super commuter 8S+. Please feel free to ask me any questions here. To answer your initial question: This does depend on a number of factors, such as terrain, weight, assist level, speed etc. I usually cruise at around 22 mph on tour (120% boost), with a couple uses of sport and...

Please Critique the 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 as a Practical Car Replacement Strategy

I didn't read your post close enough. My bike uses the powerpack 500 and I could probably buy another one of those today, it looks like the shortage is specific to the tube batteries, which seem to be much less common. It does suck that the tube batteries are so much harder to get. Is a bike...

Please Critique the 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 as a Practical Car Replacement Strategy

Its like any other part, right? If a part breaks, I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer had to order replacement parts since they don't carry every part in stock. That battery and motor are the same exact ones that is used in other brand bikes. Trek doesn't specialize the motor or battery, they...

Please Critique the 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 as a Practical Car Replacement Strategy

I might have just figured something out. federal law states that an ebike can't go over 20mph on its own power. 28mph ebikes use a motor only powerful enough to go 20 on its own power, but with human assistance that same motor is powerful enough to go 28. As far as I know, NV mostly follows...

Please Critique the 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 as a Practical Car Replacement Strategy

So I had a chat with Trek, this is what they said: I'm still not sure what to think to be honest... If it wasn't allowed I would have expected that not to be an option the dealer can make in the first place. Also knowing that @Court himself said that he heard from a Trek representative that...

Since I forgot to mention it, I bought the bike in Nevada, USA from an authorized Trek dealer.

Please Critique the 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 as a Practical Car Replacement Strategy

Mine came enabled without me saying a thing. I didn't have to convince anyone, didn't even mention it to anyone at the store, and had no contact with the guy who actually put the bike together and set it up. I didn't even know I had it until I read through the manual a day or so later and tried...

Please Critique the 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 as a Practical Car Replacement Strategy

This is not longer the case for all Trek bikes. I picked up my Supercommuter 8, special ordered straight from a Trek warehouse to my bike shop, and it came with walk mode enabled. If you look at Court's supercommuter 7 review, down in the comments, I mentioned that my supercommuter 8 came with...

    Specialized Turbo Como 3.0

I have the same mirror on my supercommuter 8, its this one: https://www.amazon.com/Mirrycle-MTB-Mountain-Bicycle-Mirror/dp/B0009R96YK Its has pretty good visibility, it will let you see a car behind and to the left/right of you, but its not so good that you can easily tell the make/model of...

    Specialized Turbo Como 3.0

Higher wear from the rear is normal for almost every bicycle. The rear has to handle all the torque from the pedals and also take most of the weight as well. I would expect wear on an ebike to be worse because of the extra torque. I think Its even worse for a cruiser style bike like the como...

    Derestrict your Bosch/Trek e-bike?

My Trek dealer told me I could come in for software updates anytime, so if this is as simple as an update and a settings change I don't see why your trek dealer wouldn't do it. When I picked up my bike from the dealer I had walk mode.

    Derestrict your Bosch/Trek e-bike?

I live in Nevada, USA, just got my bike a few weeks ago, it definitely has walk mode. I've used it a few times to help me walk it up the stairs after a tiring ride. It might be as simple as a software update from your local trek dealer. I would at least give one a call and ask about software...

    Derestrict your Bosch/Trek e-bike?

My 2018 +8S came with walk mode enabled. Maybe call up your local trek dealer and try to update to the latest firmware. Also ask them if they can change any settings, I read somewhere that dealers can change the headlight behavior and enable/disable walk mode with their update software on a...

    Hello from Nevada, supercommuter 8

The seat was my only real complaint actually, so I did end up changing the seat out for one I put on my old bike. Its a wide cruiser style seat with some suspension built in. I got my butt measured some years back and they said I need an extra wide seat to be comfortable, and that a wide cruiser...
