NHSTA has suddenly changed its tune. A few weeks ago, their website said helmets were the least effective way to reduce fatalities. The most effective measures were separating bikes from cars and reducing speeds.

The current president is following the lead of JFK. When he took office, bicycling for adults was much safer than today. Few suburban households had a second car because a three-speed bike filled the need. JFK put an end to that with a prohibitive tariff on everything but racers. This created a big market for second and third cars. The adult bicycles still for sale were not only faster but less stable and less visible. By 1975, the death rate was so high that bicyclists were wondering what to use for helmets. They hadn't been used before because there hadn't been a problem.

I’m sure this will be bemoaned in some more populated areas, but bike lanes and the objective to separate bike from vehicle traffic is really not practical in central MA without shutting down car lanes. I’ve seen a couple of municipalities add bike lanes on existing roads at the expense of a car lane, and it just jams up car traffic. That’s not good. For me, there should be an effort to provide at least a two foot paved shoulder for every local road. That’d go a long way in my book. I hope this cutback doesn’t affect trail makers, though. The more alternatives for bikers, the better; to me, getting off the road is always a goal.

I realize lots of areas have different concerns.

Doesn't it make sense for these "improvements" to be funded at the state/local level? Why should someone in the Midwest subsidize a change that primarily benefits local people somewhere else.

The main thing that holds me back going to the shop on my ebike is that it ll be stolen while Im in there, I would be prosecuted for trying to prevent the theft and the police would mock me for leaving it outside a shop.

I Never Leave my ebike unattended.

They'll have steal it out from under me.

That wouldn't be to hard since you ride with no hands.
The perp could grab your handle bar clothesline you and vault onto the bike and ride away.

Lots of perps where I ride,..

In the US you would be cited only if you stopped to reload

Interesting mate. Where I live—in rural Victoria—I can leave my trike
in the main street, and go into the supermarket out of site of it, and
know that when I come back to my trike, it'll still be there... unlocked.

If we go grocery shopping. My wife goes in and I watch the bikes. I don't know if they would disappear, but don't want to find out.

If these trends continue, EPA will soon be allowing lead in everything again. We can restart the abandoned mines in western Illinois. Colorado too! More jobs, baby.
