Can anyone help me out?

Yes, that did cross my mind to try, however I'm going to see if changing the cable works first, think that'll be the easier option. Plan B will then to try that. You've been a great help by the way, given me some good pointers to investigate, thank you,
In my mind the gender is a secondary problem. It's that your controller/display combo for some reason is pin'd out differently than most others.
No matter what cable you decide to work on.. The pin to function issue needs to be addressed.
So that opens up this option. You should be able to release the pins on the controller connector and reinsert them back into the black housing in the correct order matching the new display.
I would draw out/photograph and then do a continuity test to work and verify the process.

Yer, that's something to look at. Changing the cable to change the gender was just to open up more options as 99% of the UART displays have the female connector.

"Yer, I'm not going to change the controller, just the cable that runs to the display to change the gender so I can fit a new display that will work better for me. Also, £1400 is a lot of money to me."
You can get a good pedal bike for that money. With a good e-bike you don't need to know what UART even is...

I never let my friends buy Bafang.

I got you... but I figured if you have the display you want and the gender adapter cable already.. you can get it working without further expense and a little less work.
If you do change the controller cable keep in mind you still need to swap pin out

The controllers that haven't worked, I just sent back and got my money back. The last display I got was from Aliexpress but that was a UART protocol 2 display, was advertised as a UART one. So, coming on here for a bit of advice has been a good help. As I'm not out of pocket and have a plan, I'll do a bit of investigating on the controller side of things then order the bit's to see if I can make the display I initially wanted work using your suggestion above.
