Think you have it the wrong way round. I 'thought' I had a 40T according to the website but in fact there was a 44T on the bike. i.e. it came with a 44T from the factory. I was going to put a 38T on it ie step down from 40T by 2T. I have to take 2 links out.

So I ordered a 40T for my wife and a 38T for myself based on the fact that I 'thought' the stock was 40T from the website. Well they arrived today so I thought I'd fit mine. Just so I don't make a mistake! I need a 38T 104BCD round ring? Nothing else I need to know? The website offers 4 bolts as an extra. Do I need these aswell or will the stock bolts work do you know? Will I need a link out of the chain going from 41T to 38T do you know?

I know I can probably mitigate a bit by adapting my style but I cannot impress that on my wife. I need a proper solution. I hope the different chainring will be that. I am also now a little apprehensive going in to the hills if it means an hour or so walk home. Before I just put the chain back...

It’s a Specialized centre and they are generally excellent. The guy said he took the drive cover off and retorqued everything but didn’t see any issues. There was also some chain noise he said was due to a bent derailleur hanger. Anyway it’s all great and silent again so I’m happy out!

No nothing on the rim nor on the Specialized website so I'll need to just take off the 47s and measure the rim. At that stage I can then just try the 40 and see if it looks OK. Was just wondering if there was some rule of thumb that would tell me not to bother.
