Well I got it sorted out today, fitted the new torque sensor and the bike is functioning normally again. Whether I'm doing this again around the 5,000 mile mark remains to be seen... Thank you for the replies. Steve

Thank you for the link Harry. I hadn't seen that video. (BTW, why do they advise disconnecting the motor? With the battery disconnected, there's no energy in the system. Edit: It's because on that particular model of bike, the controller can't be accessed without disconnecting the motor wire.)...

Engwe's customer support is amazing. They even sent me a free replacement torque sensor when I had a problem. I usually get a reply within a day of contacting them.

Don't throw the old charger away. You might be able to get someone who's handy with a soldering iron to repair it at some point, and then you'll have a backup.

Since Schwalbe manufactured the tyre in question, it's literally their fault but they didn't want to know. That's shoddy quality control and service in my book but I guess we'll have to disagree.
