    Great American Wheel Route Bikepacking

I’ll think about the bass (“it’s all about that bass, that bass” Meghan Trainor) but there won’t be any Missouri on this ride.

Rick, this is definitely a masterpiece. Not only is it very clever, but incorporates so much of the journey and our discussions. I am honored by the inspiration. Now, you should use all your abundant talents to set it to music so that I can add it to my GAWR playlist. The newest big hit...

    Great American Wheel Route Bikepacking

This morning’s ride was through the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills. The Sandhills are stabilized sand dunes. Stabilized by the beautiful native grasses growing thick upon them. I made such good speed. I had the sense I was riding through mountains yet on the flat. I left Valentine at 6 a.m...

    Great American Wheel Route Bikepacking

Noted. I plan to ride early morning til noonish the next 4 days. May find a pool somewhere through the weekend heat wave. I also look at convection activity every afternoon while in the mid-west. The NOAA SPC (storm prediction center) posts convection activity.

Next time I need a PI who knows something about bikes, I’m hiring you. Exactly right, Moccasin Springs in Hot Springs SD. Best recovery strategy - 3 days, cause after 1, 2 didn’t seem like enough. BTW your coaching resolved the rear wobble (bike, not mine). I never would have thought to...

A Bike That Does Exist, by PEM

Thanks Rick, for profiling my adventure on EBR. IT’s serendipitous that you and Stefan are chatting about my bike in this thread. I started as a voyeur of EBR a few years ago, mostly reading Stefan’s posts about his VADO because I had just acquired one but knew very little about it. I learned...

Touring - Planning a long journey

Very helpful. Thank you. After your comments, I‘m spending the day reanalyzing my route using CalTopo to work in the elevation component.

Touring - Planning a long journey

I am grateful for your detailed response. You are the first person with whom I have connected to have attempted this. You addressed many of the issues that concern me. I had heard about locked forest road gates but don’t know anyone who actually had to deal with it. Were you aware of these...

Touring - Planning a long journey

Very good point, re walk assist. I will add that to the list of necessary features, as on ride day, I will be 72 yo (female). I am retired and live between the Gulf Coast region of Texas and the Colorado Front Range.

Touring - Planning a long journey

Lots of good information. Thank you. As I prioritize the likely challenges, battery recharging, mechanical problems and weather are my top three. Regarding battery charging, I spend a lot of time each day studying 50 mile route segments. Your daily mileage max is much higher than mine. I...

Touring - Planning a long journey

Thanks for responding. I will be bikepacking and intend to do both camping and some lodging. I've budgeted for up to 45 nights of lodging, with the balance of nights in fee or free campsites. It will be a solo, self-supported ride; no sag. I will have to develop a hunting dog's scent for...

Touring - Planning a long journey

I have been a voyeur at EBR since I retired in 2021 and bought an ebike, Specialized Turbo Vado sl 5.0. I have since given that bike to my niece, as I am contemplating a new adventure, and for various reasons I know the VADO would not work for me. Has anyone ridden The Great American Wheel...
