All fine and well, but if the OP has a backpack that already houses their laptop, it seems to me that the best advice would be how they can carry that laptop.

I'm not necessarily anti-pannier, but I see that the OP was asking about carrying a backpack with a laptop in it, and for that, I do not see panniers as the most effective solution. A backpack with a laptop could be fairly easily bungeed to a rear rack or placed and secured in a front basket...

Another positive revealed itself as a result of swapping out the front brakes: I was able to swap the old 2 pot hydraulic set-up onto my Throne BMX instead of the crappy old mechanical lever and caliper it had up front. Huge improvement in braking all round!

Just the front. The rear is adequate for the percentage of stopping it contributes.

I still need to throw the rotor on. I have the rotor and the adapter. Headed out of town this weekend, but I will have it done next week.

Why not get a bike that has no pedals, if you don't pedal?

The Maguras have a tiny set screw with an Allen head that does the job.

Just did that and voila! Issue solved.

I installed the Magura front brakes without installing the 203 mm rotor initially, as I wanted to see what the caliper itself added to braking. A little longer lever pull (could be the rotor thickness, I suppose, or a minor bleeding issue) but vastly improved braking. I will add the 203 mm rotor...
