foofer, I think the confusion might be that the black is the wheel itself, and the silver coating was on top of that. It seems to me the coating got ripped off when the tape was removed, and that’s what looks weird/crappy. I don’t know what the silver coating was originally for but it does...

Sandy, I think you need to check your math here… If I’m not mistaken, we’re talking about 2 horsepower or so… Certainly, more power from a mid-drive means more stress on the drivetrain. But I don’t think we’re in the same ballpark here as auto or even motorcycle territory.

Well, it’s also compounded by the fact that many of these ebike companies are teetering on the edge or already gone. I would argue that while I’m sure it’s partly planned obsolescence, it’s also because there is little/no standardization in the designs or protocols of the components.
