Bosch Drive Unit Service Kit - Maintenance BDU2XX

Join me "Across the Caspian SEA" ))))))) this is my idea !)
I would love to do that. Unfortunately stuck here for some more years.

Or make complete overhaul ! ( all bearing ) before the trip !
No need if the motor still runs smoothly.

80.000km no Gen 2 motor issues!! UNBELIVABLE!
You see motors with over 50.000km in Germany every now and then.
And those motors like to be run in Turbo. That makes them last very long.
If you pedal a lot with no or low assistance, you might break it. Done that with 3 or 4 motors. Going only high assistance now as I have plenty of batteries.

Speaking of batteries, make sure your batteries are okay. They are more likely to fail after that mileage.
You can see the age of your batteries in their serial number.

Go with the Service Kit, not the bearing set.

You will need special tools to replace the motor or the service kit.
Also, the spare motor should be configured right if you get one and your bike has the Rohloff or Enviolo. Cannot see that on the picture.
Here is what I would do:

Get a spare motor, make sure it is configured correctly. Leave it at a friends place and have it shipped in case you need it.
or
Bring the Service Kit and tools on the trip. Make sure you know how to install it. It is not that easy if you do it for the first time.
I would go with the latter option and start the trip with the motor as is. Make sure you have the right tools. There are youtube videos about how to install the service kit.
I have seen another guy going all the way to Asia, over 80.000km with no Gen 2 motor issues.

BTW, I have a spare motor in my trailer to give it an extra boot on steep uphills :D

but why do the like to be in turbo ? ( from the mechanical point pf view ) ?

For that I would have to go deeper into the details of the internal gears of the motor.
High torque input on the cranks from the rider is something these motors don't like. They just love Turbo.
If you need to save battery on some trips, use it on uphills and ride the flat sections with no assistance. Avoid pushing it too hard uphill with no assistance. Mabye get a lower gear ratio.

More here:

But these motors can handle even increased motor power which you can get by altering some resistors on the internal motor PCB.

If the drive unit is functioning well, is strong, doesn't leak, or make any noises, I'd leave it alone. In racing, you make no major changes before an important event. I'd do the same for a long trip.

i think about spare motor ( just to keep it in mind and to have it ) that in case of emergency could be delivered somewhere in Tajikistan or Usbekistan ot Kazahtasn ) or any other STAN :)

FU..ink upper Intermediate level of English( mine )))) around )))))))))))))))))) sure !!!!!!!!!!!
I'm watching this YT channel:

The Polish man hitchhiked a big deal of Russia in 2024. Could you tell me at what type of places you would like to stay in the countries surrounding the Caspian Sea to charge your batteries? I also assume your trip would happen in the warm season?

It is the most interesting plan!

Please be reporting the trip on EBR Forum!

I wonder why you do not intend to ride near to the sea shore? Many thousand km inside Iran?
I also wonder how good Bosch navigation would be there.

two different shores ) Yes 5000 - 6000 maybe ) Bosch Navigation is a almost excellent ) If Army does not block GPS ( navigation wont work in any country ) . Check my 1000 km ( under Smolensk ) navigation went crazy ! ) in Iran the same. Sometimes some district are closed for GPS , sometimes more areas ( if necessary )

1000 km with Bosh Navigation ( just a few mistakes - cant sat real mistakes , but some trails ( 1-5 ) overgrown with trees ( maybe from 18-19 centries ) , anyway was easy to find bypass ) and Bosh Navigation confuses railway ( it is displayed the way ti go )

looks like imagination of this guy ! Land boarders are closed ( Of Aizerbadzhan ) , and Turkmenistan as i mentioned above ( you should hire escort and even in this case - hard to get a visa)
I see. Nothing is simple there, it seems. Are you riding through Chechnia and Georgia?
