Crunchy, slipping 750 hub- should I have the old one torn down and then have the new one laced in -or- since it’s exactly the same/should I open the case pull the failed guts out,and reload with the new guts?
-it’s 1.5 years old and failed at 5K+ Bummer - what’s the best plan to get rolling ASAP ? Cheers!

What is your source? I found gears for my 2017 ebikeling geared hub motor to be impossible to source. Ebikeling is not even selling the same motor anymore. Also it is questionable saving & relacing the old wheel. The two power wheels I bought, the wheel is double layer and ****. It costs >$100 here to get a wheel laced. Lacing one myself to use an IGH resulted in buying 3 lengths of spokes. Spoke calculators lie a lot, I don't know why people even publish them. The good ones were $55 a set.
The best bargain is a whole nother power wheel, with controller, throttle, PAS pickup, brake switches. Switching the motor then takes an hour. It takes 3 or 4 hours to change the controller mount if the new one is not pin compatible or has a different mounting profile. Much less than the six weeks it took me to lace a wheel. I ended up with some spokes longer than others, and had to buy extra long nuts to compensate. Don't count on salvaging a freewheel from the old motor. Even with the correct Park tool I've never been able to get a freewheel of that has been out in the rain or splashed.
BTW the original ebikeling motor with plastic gears lasted ~4500 miles. 2 1/2 years. I ride 8-10 mph and only use the motor 20% of the distance unless the wind is >12 mph in my face. So 100% of the time 25 mph riders of plastic gear motors might get a lot less mileage out of one. The bafang motor that luna was selling when I bought in 2017, that he sold replacement gears for, only fit fat wheels. Which is not the kind of bicycle I want to pedal unpowered 55 miles a week.

what Hub motor failed you in only 18months? i know one failed motor could just be a Lemon but im still curious as to what brand motor you have

If you decide to just replace "the guts", maybe check out the original guts to see exactly what failed first? Pretty sure about anything you might need to repair that one is available, and would be MUCH cheaper than you can buy a whole motor....

You can buy the planetary gears, but not the outer ring.

I didn’t look but greenbikekit had all repair parts in the past. They’ve been very reliable.

Thanks- I’m buying a new one-I’ll swap the guts & attempt to repair the failed one,if those parts are available I’ll fix it and have a backup I guess-

I don't understand the slipping comment. Could it just be the freewheel?
No all the bike hardware works perfectly- as soon as pas 1 is juiced the motor makes scraping sounds and if you throttle it,there is a slip detectable similar to a failing clutch

There's 2 clutches. 1 is in the free wheel. The other is in the motor.

I have found the hard way that marking things such as left & right, in & out.. with colors of paint pen ink and or nail polish while taking a few photos helps. It sucks when you assemble with something the wrong way around. Good luck. Also having some high-temp grease and thread lock will help the job last.
When things heat up they need to get repacked with grease. Interestingly repacking is part of biking history. The most famous mountain biking race is called Repack for this reason. It is in my neighborhood:
. Fun stuff!

If the clutch in the motor is shot, that's pretty much exactly how it's going to act.....

I haven’t ever opened one of these- is that a replaceable part?
Yup! If you check out Harry's link up above, it shows a picture of the gears. Under those gears is a metal piece. That's the clutch. Pretty easy to change from what I can see.

Here's a link to greenbikekit, and their parts. I'm not sure which one you need. You'll need to do some homework on the exact model info for your motor.

Nice! Thanks-

You should know it's pretty unusual for the clutches to fail. Are you jumping the bike or anything that might stress something like that? Just curious... -Al

Bafang 750
is it the true fullfat 750 or the smaller "750" that most brands use? the smaller motor is really just an overvolted Bafang 500watt! what im getting at is if your going to open the hub and you have the smaller 750 i would not even bother replacing any parts, i would just upgrade to the full size bafang "750", the motor drops right into your existing Hub and i think it cost a little over 200? check out these videos so you can see the difference in the 2 bafang 750s!
