How does Bosch sense braking?

I just had the hydraulic brakes replaced on our tandem and there are no wires coming out like some other e bikes I have had. how does the system know when your braking?

It doesn't.
I have a similar situation with my touring e-bike. With no braking sensor, no braking detection but you typically stop pedalling and the cadence sensor cuts the motor power off on braking.

It doesn’t need brake cutouts since there is no throttle and there is no motor run-on when you stop pedaling. This goes for Shimano, Brose, and Yamaha as well.
ya that makes sense my last bike had a mid drive and throttle. if you did not hold the brake just having your foot on the peddle would cause it to jump forward.

I could have had out tandem upgraded to hope hydraulic brakes then bummer. well I doubt I needed them and the cost is far higher. my matura brakes on my bosch e bike are matura e brakes so. I thought they shut the motor off. but they are just a lot stronger then standard 2 piston brakes.

No cadence sensor on the Bosch, just torque sensor. Stop pedaling and the motor stops. No need for a motor inhibitor.

My magura have wires and they are in use on my bike but our tandem does not the pics are on my performance speed bike and the tandem had the performance motor

I’m confused. Your bike with the Magura brakes is a mid-drive? If so, is it a class 2 with a Bafang mid-drive?

no bosch permanence speed with matura e brakes with the wire. our tandem is a performance without the wires. but I thought it had them but after the brake change and looking no brake wires.

Are you saying that on one of your bikes the brake wires are wired into the Bosch system? If so, that’s a new one for me....or maybe they’re wired into a brake light??.

you know that can be it has a brake light. but I messed the wire up when a strap got caught in the back fender. the shop was talking about having to run new wires from the front of the bike. but thats why I thought the tandem had them too.

That makes much more sense!

Just for your information @fooferdoggie:
My Vado with Brose/Specialized mid-motor has the braking sensor with the TRP Zurich 4-piston 180 mm hydraulic brakes. One of the reason is the law requires having the STOP light on Euro Speed-Pedelecs. But my Giant Trance E+ has no braking sensor with the high-end Shimano 4-piston 203 mm brakes for the reason I explained before: You stop pedalling on braking with a no-throttle motor.

To add.....Many/most class 1 bikes with hub motors also have brake switches due to them having a delay in shutting off power when you stop pedaling. For me, this very noticeable delay Is unacceptable and a big reason why I chose bikes with mid-drives from one of the “big four” motor manufactures.

It actually does have a cadence sensor as well. So does Shimano, Brose, and Yamaha.......as well as a wheel speed sensor.
I had no idea because there is no delay or run on like any cadence sensor only eBike I've ridden. Know about the speed sensor of course, but did a quick check and you are right.

They use all 3 sensors to calculate the optimal amount of assist required. It is why they are so smooth and natural feeling, compared to a cadence only system. I believe Yamaha also has an angle sensor to adjust for road incline. Really cool stuff!

Hi @fooferdoggie ---the Bosch eBike System in NA does not connect to a braking system. All of the sensors are built into the drive unit that detect a rider shifting or adding torque to the system. These are just a few of the parameters that speak to when assistance is delivered.

Hope this helps--please reach out with any questions.
