your thoughts and prayers for my bike getting cosmetic surgery

I had to have some fun with the title my bulls bike is in a close local shop to get a brake upgrade. the magura brakes are great and very powerful but after getting the shimano deore 4 piston brakes on our tandem and loving the 1 finger very little effort braking my hands love it. the magura's are really powerful but they take a lot more effort to use. for me only one finger if I have my finger at the end of the lever. so I finally broke down for the upgrade. the only real issue is its a pain to run wires through my bike as the tube is so small. it was battle to upgrade the display because of that. they only had the shimano xt's on hand so that's what I am getting. I just hope the labor is not too high. not going to get the ice tech rotors I don't need them on this bike though they look cool.

Can the Maguras not be adjusted to require less finger effort?

no its just the way they work the way they push the piston in. just the effort to squeeze them till the pads touch is about 3 times more then the shimano. Loved them as they were stong and responsive but my hands like the shimano 4 pistons more I put on our tandem.. this year with gloves on I notice it more. my hands have some tendonitis and using one finger feels better. I bought the magura top 4 piston and they took the same effort lucky I did not mount them first. I was able to test them before putting them on the bike.

One finger very little effort braking my hands love it.
Steve, one-finger braking is my favourite feature of hydraulic disc brakes. It's so seldom mentioned on the forum where 'powerful' braking under stressful circumstances seems to be considered the prime advantage of discs.

For me, being able to reduce speed from 'a little too fast' to 'just right' by applying the tiniest touch on the levers is the winning feature.

Okay, I haven't answered your question!

yes we got the deore brakes put on our tandem and I bedded the pads on a 20% donwhill grade stopped the bike with both of us on it with one finger each. I was hooked. in winter I like to ride with a finger on the brakes when I have gloves on and I have to have two with the magura and that stresses my hand. with the shimano's you can get full braking with a finger right at the front of the lever. the magura I have to have it at the end. I tried their single finger levers it helped but still my hand is not in the right position and I cant move the levers in that far.

ok got my bike back at 4. its nice to have the shop about 4 blocks from my shop so I can just walk over and get it. of course since it is portland it was raining. so its harder to bed the pads in in the rain. but even then they are a little stronger in the rain then the maguraas are dry. but one finger does it all. but the feel is a lot different from the magura's the maguras may give you a little better control since they don't grab as fast and take more pressure to brake. it only cost 120 to get them installed I was afraid it would be hard to run the new cable with the hassle it was to run the new wire for the computer.

ok after a bit more riding the difference between the brakes are noticeable. the reason I got the shimano's was because they took so little effort to use. but the downside is they grab with little effort so it is more finicky to modulate them. with the resistance in the magura's you can have finer control. I have heard Hope brakes feel the best but having to find them and not knowing if the shop could deal with the housing was a no go. I wish they had bite adjustment but I think I have to g up a few notches for that.

Nice upgrade! I’m guessing you will notice much better modulation after the pads have been properly bedded.
they are always grabby. its jsuth e way they are. I am used to them on my tandem. but that has more weight so its not quit as notciable. but I don't have a problem with it I am used to it. its just different.

If you dont mind me asking, what ebike are you doing the brake upgrade to? I am somewhat interested in doing a brake upgrade for my Lectric...
