I generally rode around with Levi's jean shorts/cut off jeans, but in the warmer weather, they're a bit much. Once I got a nice light belt from Grip6.com they're a lot better, but...
Sombrio Badass Shorts - Men's: Versatile, freeride shorts that take mobility and abrasion resistance seriously. Smart innovations like a DWR coating and knee-pad coverage that doesn't add bulk behind your knee.

CDN price 109.99, but MEC had them on sale a few weeks ago, so I grabbed them and a pair of Five Ten Freeriders.
I'm really happy with these shorts (and the shoes, too). The shorts are super light/comfortable, only two pockets. No liner/padding. Just the right amount of stretch and give. Shorts with the velcro side tabs to prevent plumber butt and bunching in general are the only thing I want to wear on rides now, and will probably look for long pants in a similar style.
They especially work well if you've got some quality underwear. I've given up on cotton, and now only wear bamboo viscose. It completely beats cotton in every way, IMHO, and not just for cycling. There's other brands, but I prefer Moxy&Zen
Disclosure: I know the owners of Moxy&Zen, but I don't get free underwear from them (though a few years back I did get a couple of pairs to help them decide on testing sizing).
