UCSF Emergency Physicians begin tracking injury data from ebikes, e-scooters, etc.

New category of bikes, new stuff to count! I hope that the data helps to provide evidence that cycling safety is a public health issue and that separate and safe bike paths and trails with CONNECTIVITY are essential!

Yes, that would be nice. But the anti ebike lobby will be looking for stats to prove that ebikes are more dangerous and need to be further regulated or banned altogether.

That’s a little pessimistic, the trouble I see in the DC area at present is there are now several ebikeshare and e-scooter companies operating but the local regulations about who can use shared use trails, sidewalks, and paths, and other off street bicycle infrastructure have not yet been changed. Accurate data about the nature and number of injuries on streets and bike lanes should inform the debate. The only issue is under counting, after I broke my leg last week I did not need an ambulance or have to go to an Emergency Room, and I suspect most simple contusions, lacerations, abrasions, etc are treated outside the ER.
