So they now have their two ebike models available. The Meld and the Merge.

"Carmakers fear that the generation of today's youth may not need - or want to - purchase a vehicle at all"

Hmmn... they're going to have to sell a heck of a lot of ebikes to make up for lost car sales, if that is the intent ! I don't know if I buy that so called notion of 'fear' or the solution of them selling ebikes. There are hundreds of ebike brands, so competition is already fierce. GM could barely stay afloat before their last govt bail out, with only a handful of car competitors.

Oh well, with GM and Ford and Harley getting into the EV 'bike' game, at least it's bringing more awareness to the industry itself.

I do sort of like the looks of the Meld.

Car manufacturers will fail if the practice defensive development. Instead of focusing on "last mile" mobility (which really doesn't justify motorized assist in the 1st place) they should focus on ebikes that are intended to be "car replacements" like the Specialized Turbo Vado and the Trek Super Commuter (albeit that 250W mid-drives are still to slow & under-powered in my opinion to be truly effective for transportation).
