Stromer Elite / Sport Issues?

Hello I'm new to this forum; looks good!

Purchased a new leftover Stromer Elite January 2014 from a BMC dealer who took over the old inventory of another shop, and didn't want to be in the ebike business (pretty common in S Florida). The price was too good to pass up, even after reading about all the horror stories regarding the motor and the brakes.

I'm a little confused and maybe some other owners can provide some insight about what problems they had under use...

Put 900 miles on the bike with no problems, so far. The bike is faster than advertised, pedal assist cruising at 23 mph with a cadence of around 70 rpm and the range is 25 to 35 miles depending on the assist level or throttle use(checked against my iPhone speedpro+ App.).

Only issue I had was with the battery state of charge indication, which was stuck at 52%.. They just swapped in a another battery and that was fine.

The brakes are a squealing horror. Sanded the discs and the pads and within a few days the rear brake only squeals badly.. In the rain the squeal will annoy everyone! Time for a different pad.

The other issue is a lack of a rear suspension and narrow tires make for a hard ride... Was thinking about getting the Schwalbe Big Bens that come with the ST1's, but haven't been able to source one. The Maxxis 1.75 tires have been trouble free otherwise..

If anyone knows what motor issues to look for please let me know.

Hello joe,

I have an ST1 and have over 1500k on it. No problems to report yet other than yes the brakes squeak for sure! Replacing the pads with higher quality ones will cure that I'm sure. I think the motor issues your talking about have been solved. I believe it was an over heating thing, but the new software takes care if that.

You can order the Big Ben right from Schwalbe, but I'm not sure if your wheel would be compatible. You might want to check with them first.

Cheers!

Hey Joe, welcome to the forums! I'm glad the Stromer Sport is working well for you, sounds like you got an amazing deal... I reviewed the bike quite a while back and remember the bumpier ride feel in the rear and some trouble shifting (it was a rental and kind of beat up).

Does the Stromer Sport have 26" tires? If so, it looks like you can get Big Ben's from Schwalbe directly through Amazon for ~$33. Are those the tires you were thinking of?

thank you! Yes it has 26" tire... I was looking for the 26x2.15" BigBens that are on the ST1... Couldn't find that particular size ad model on Amazon... May have to order direct from Stromer.
