Problem with Thule locks

Hello,

I'm a newbie here and needed to share a frustrating event. Thule T2 Pro locks need some attention given to them. For me it wasn't the locking mechanism but the fact that the locking cylinder has the key code for the lock embossed on the cylinder. Ordering "extra" keys is simple on thier website- if you have that code on the lock. Make sure you write the code from the lock down - then grind off.

My Thule rack (without bikes) was stolen a few days ago and it wasn't until I was assembling the new one I saw this. Kuat does the same thing. I was surprised to see it gone and even more surprised that there was no damage. For the replacement rack - the info is grinded off and I now have a chain from the vehicle frame to the rack frame.

Someone could order 200 sets of replacement keys and drive around looking for a $600 Thule rack to steal or better yet our bike off of it. I just wish I knew this earlier.

Yes, that was what I was talking about. You can no longer read it on my current rack.

I know that anything can be stolen by a motivated thief, but it seems Thule could have thought about security better. Well, I'm glad others are aware of the issue.

Thanks for calling attention to this. I'm getting a receiver hitch for my Subaru installed next week and will probably order the Thule Easyfold. I'll definitely look for a place to attach a chain for extra security when I must leave it on the vehicle or when I have a bike on the rack. And will probably just keep the Easyfold stored inside the vehicle or house when not hauling a bike. From the videos, looks like easy and quick work to just attach and detach from the vehicle as necessary and folds up nicely for storage.

I have an Saris Superclamp4 4-bike rack and it has the exact same key code stamped on the outside of the locks. It uses the same key to secure the bikes on the rack with two security cables and lock the rack to the hitch.

I had an old Softride Access hitch lock and bolt set with 1.25" and 2" locking bolts that also fit my Saris I now use. I also have a security cable I can attach from the hitch to bike rack if I have to leave the bikes for an extended amount of time.
