polishing the knob.

my shift lever has gotten so slick from all the shifting I ahve done in the last two years that my thumb slips off sometimes. so at a stoplight I took my knife to it and got some traction.

I wonder if some heat shrink tubing would help?
I doubt it would hold up for long. I know of non slip coatings but I doubt it. this is plenty. I like the feel of it smooth but I think my winter gloves really do a number on it. actually drilling small holes in it may be the best choice like my xt brake levers but that may weaken it and sometimes my thumb just gets the edge of the lever.

I don't think putting anything on it would last and it would not feel good. I shift way too much and want the lever to feel good. this is plenty of traction but I may sand it it with some 60 grit sandpaper to make it more even.

see the xtr shifter has dimples. I think thats what I will do its easy and should add enough traction. or if I get rich an upgrade.

Soldering iron should make short work with the dimpling.

ya or a Dremel. why is it they only make the top components with practical things like good grip? my Deore brake levers smooth my xt levers with the holes for better grip.

Make a judgment without knowing the facts. Whatever...

BTW This isn't 3MM "Safety Walk" tape. It doesn't eat hands and fingers during a long day on the range.
no worries. I only need a tiny bit of grip. the scratches worked but they would not be long term. I ised a dremel and should have used a 1/16" bit instead of a 1/* but I don't have one that would fit. a bit ugly but it works well. little hard to drill on a curved face.

a little ugly but not like anyone will see it. I should have used that 3/32" bit for all the holes. then I sanded it with some 800 grit paper to smooth things up. my finger will buff it out from there. but the grip is good but not aggressive.

hmm, one would think a bit of grip tape would be a better solution that cutting up or drilling the shifter.

you just want a little bit of friction. my thumb slides on the shifter if I do three shifts at once. if it was stuck in one place it would cause what seems like arthritis in my thumbs to flair up. but that link will work for my iphone case to make it grippy. I shift a lot as I ride in the city and nothing is flat

yeah I get it, had the same type of shifter on my fat tire, and those grip tape things worked fine.

on my new bike it has the drop bar shifters so not an issue.

Interestingly, the only upgrade on the Microshift Advent Pro shifter is the pad on the thumb. It used to also be a ball bearing mech but they are all using bearings now.

the problem is if you do 4 shifts at once you have a lot of movement. I cant handle it most of the time its just too much reach.

Plastidip. Most hardware stores carry this rubber coating in small cans. If you don’t like it, you can peel it off. If it works good but later peels, just re-dip it. Stuff is not that expensive and black should be easy to find.

Put a little baking soda in the holes and level them off, then put a drop of super glue on each hole.
