Pedal assist cable

As my pedal assist cable from the crank is only a male connector and the other end from controller is also male I done a rewire job by cutting female connector off original pedal assist cable and just twisted cables together it works but when I go to faster option it starts off fine then drops power so have to slow down then pedal again for it to kick in.

This is only way I think to sort the connection by getting this adaptor pictured
