Next Conversion 48V BBS02 750W

Hi All.....I guess I am addicted to converting bikes. I decided to do another conversion and based on my previous 3 conversions, I've decided to do another Bafang mid-drive. Since I already have the 36V 500W (single) I decided to build the 48V 750W single. Kit is ordered from em3ev and will probably arrive 2nd week in July, and the battery is ordered 48V 15AH and should be here next week. I expect the conversion to take only a few days once I have all the components and hope to be riding the bike by the end of July. I'm building a bigger battery box on this conversion to accommodate a higher capacity battery. The 15Ah to start should be more then I presently need, but why not allow for expanded capacity when doing the construction.

I'll post additional pics as I build the bike. As I have in the past, I bought a BD hybrid Motobecane

Hi, Just completed a similar build from the frame up with a 48v 13.6ah battery instead (photo attached).
I`m thinking your battery box is a little overkill even for a 15aH, there`s plenty of downtube and bottle batteries that power which should fit your frame?
You`ll find the power is harsh especially using the throttle, too much like an on/off switch, possibly em3ev have addressed that and re-programmed.
There`s a lot of info on programming the controller on endless sphere. Good luck with the build!!

LOL...I agree that the battery box will be bigger then necessary. I am building the larger box so I can accommodate custom larger capacity batteries. The down tube batteries are great and the best option for most conversions.

I don't install a throttle on any of my conversions. Used the throttle once on my Neo Carbon and thought...OK what's the point? I understand why some might want the throttle, but for me it's useless.

PS...your converted bike looks great!

Hi Court,

I guess it's an addiction. I looked up the Elite Trail and it's not what you would call a premium bike. It looks like $350. From all the YouTube videos, the 48V 750W systems are getting people well into the 30's. Not sure what you have in mind.

I built a Mac 350W on a BD frame. It seems fine, but I think with the mechanical brakes it isn't something I want to push much above 20mph, which is all that is legal in Utah.

I guess you are looking at maybe 30 AH with two boxes. With Ravi doing these double (triple) centuries, maybe that is the trend. I wonder about some of these guys on Aliexpress who are building 18AH shrink batteries at very low prices.

Looks like a great project, and maybe you can cost it out for us when you are done!

Has anyone bought a battery from EM3ev? I am considering an upgrade to 47V. A bit concerned of ordering directly from China and posting card #s.

Hi Court,

I guess it's an addiction.

I think so.......the reason I bought the Elite trail; it uses the same 6061 aluminum frame (with slightly different cable routing) as the other Elite's they sell and it also uses the same Suntour suspension front fork. I'm not to concerned about the mechanical brakes...........the original Elite conversion also has mechanical brakes and I'm approaching 3,000 miles on that bike without any problems. I generally ride at around 24-25 when commuting and feel comfortable at that speed. I do intend on using this bike for commuting and long distance rides (reason for the larger battery box). Even though I don't think the 750W motor is an absolute necessity I decided that at the end of a very long ride it would be nice to top long steep grades when I'm spent......

I'm kind of new to this myself and I like what u've done! As I believe you mentioned previously you're addicted to building... I'm having the same problem myself! I just picked up a cannondale trail 6 29er. It's super light with hydraulic brakes(as opposed to the mechanical ones on my current bike), anyway I think I'm going to transfer everything over as I just received the hydraulic brake sensors in the mail. I think I can probably knock everything out in a few hours if there are no problems!
My current place is a little heavy compare to the Cannondale or even most bikes! I didn't mind because I was going to be putting a motor on it. I have hit 49 miles an hour on the Diamondback(not typical), but it was achieved! Now I actually have some builds for some friends and people locally who have only seen the "Big Cat" brand(which are also twice as heavy and twice as slow as the one I built), but I don't want to sound like a hater or anything;-)

Yes, it's satisfying to see the final result....fantastic conversion...love your final product!. Keep us informed as you do more conversions. I think more riders would do conversions if they knew how easy most conversions are, and they also realized what a great bike they end up with.

Thank you! Much appreciated! As you can maybe tell, I'm a little partial to the dirt bike style setup which I grew up riding! Don't judge! Jk! I really appreciate the feedback! Jason

That's a beautiful bike. Like to know if you end up thinking it is worth it to go with the simpler bike. The DB has that great suspension. The bbs02 looks like it was made for the bike.

Update....BBS02 was shipped last week from EM3ev and is currently clearing customs in the US, DHL estimates delivery...tomorrow. Battery is on the way from CA and should arrive later this week. I'll install the motor and then finish the battery box and install the battery. Final installation of controls, shifter, brake handles should be finished by 2/3 rd week July and I should be riding by the end of the third week or sooner.

right on queue the BBso2 arrived today.

I already checked the fit through the BB and it won't slip in. Had the same issue with my first conversion, so tomorrow I'll take an abrasive flapwheel and open the bore slightly until it slips in.

OK...Battery arrived today...48V 15AH. Here's a picture of it sitting in the battery box frame. I've installed the motor so all that remains; secure the battery in the box, put on the sides, wire up the battery to the motor and install the controls on the bike. Should be finished by mid July or sooner.

Court,

Was wondering about what kind of cells you are using this time. You left a lot of space for the battery. I'm glad that system on the Cafe/Mac worked out, a big box on the frame where the weight is right. I noticed the Cafe doesn't have disk brakes, or at least the cheaper ones. Any issues? I finally decided the mechanicals on the Adventure Elite are good enough, just not very refined.

The stuff that Paul sells seems to work well for making a great bike for a reasonable price, something you can maintain reasonably. Easy to upgrade or replace the battery pack.

This bike should go anywhere. I sometimes wonder what the Mac would do with 48v, but there's nothing I need to do beyond what I already have.

have.

Hi George,

The Cafe does have disc brakes...none of the Motobecanes are particularly well outfitted, pretty average gear. The frames are good and that's what I care about. All the other components I can upgrade when necessary. Yeah the battery box is big on this new conversion, but I purposefully built it big so I can put a very large capacity battery in it. I'm thinking that the next battery would be custom built 20AH so I can ride the bike a very long way. I bought the battery from the same Ebay vendor I got the 36V 15Ah battery that on the Elite Adventure I built last year. So far that battery has been performing flawlessly. I don't know which cells they used, but the vendor offers a 3 month return policy and a one year replacement if the battery fails. Every interaction I've had with him has been fast and accurate. If I can spend some continuous time on the build should have it put together and running soon....very busy at work at the moment, not too much "play time"!

Court J.

PS...put Mavic 719 wheels on the Elite Adventure last year and haven't had any spoke problems or truing issues....just keeps rolling! ;)

Court,

I like the idea of those Mavic wheels. Reasonable price.

I think I know the guy on that battery pack. I assumed he was importing from China to SF, bumping the price a little. I bought a LiFePo from China but haven't gotten it yet. The numbers on the amps these packs will deliver are all over the place. You could probably fit a small reserve pack in that space. I'm hoping for a lot better prices on batteries in a year. One area where Paul is tough, his packs with the shipping.

George
