Silent Trails

Parking the truck at Watkins Gate Road (top of map)...near the new subdivision, I head up the asphalt (bike/hike only) Barloy Canyon road. Quite a bit longer than I expected to get to the lake from this direction. In the upper portions of this road it passes by bunkers & square buildings from past military operations, fenced in by cyclone fences. Before heading downhill to the lake I take a left on Sandstone Ridge Rd....an elevated and long rollercoaster gravel road with views of the Salinas Valley and narrow wooded valleys to my left and right. At the fork trail choice of trail #60 & 22 I hook a right down #60. Steep at times (photo) with plenty of deep sand portions before reaching the bottom on Crescent Bluff Rd.
View from Sandstone Ridge Rd.looking east towards the Salinas Valley. Close up of ranch at center in next shot
Tucked back off Reservation Rd.,is a great ranch property. Visible just this side of that ranch (at left) is Crescent Bluff Rd. I will be on after visiting the lake.
.Trail #60 was a steep downhill with sections of deep sand in spots. The lake is visible in the distance.
Crescent Bluff is a wide hard packed dirt road that boarders a private ranch with manicured green lawns and a gorgeous small pond with a dock. The road winds back and forth following the contours of the hills till it's finale back at Barloy Canyon. I loved the ride so much I retraced it at a more spirited pace. Total ride time....two hours
