My first Crash Report :D

So crashed my bike today. I took my hand of the handlebar and I braked and I'm not sure what happened next. I landed on my ankle and then my knee. Skin off some areas. No broken bones. I feel like my lower spine is completely misaligned. Pain when I make certain movements like bending. :D

I was going about 20 mph. Fenders broke but the bike still runs :D I haven't done any thorough checking yet to see.

I need some kind of protective gear for Summer. It gets really hot where I live. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Welcome to the club! Time use to slow down during an accident in my younger days to give me time to protect myself a little bit. Now, I go from upright to my backside in a split second with just a blip in between.

My first wreck on my ebike was on a muddy trail turn caused me to break 2 bolts and bending a 3rd on the stem securing my handlebars. I was tossed off the bike and landed on my backpack and shoulder. The backpack acted like an airbag and cushioned my fall; but, I still landed hard enough on my shoulder for it to be sore for a week. My head did make contact with the ground and my Fox helmet saved my from a concussion at best or maybe being knocked out at worst. I had to ride my bike home +4 miles with a floppy handlebar and covered in mud.

I had a few low speed spills with road rash on my elbow and knee. I ended up purchasing G-Form Pro-X knee and elbow pads. I worry about having a fall at +20 mph on a paved road and getting a very deep road rash.

Very comfortable to wear, don't get too hot in summer heat (it has been +95 degrees with 100-103 degrees days in a row a few weeks ago), UV protection, and they don't slide/slip if you start to sweat. The knee/elbow pads come in handy when I trail ride because I was scratching my limbs too much on trees/shrubs/weeds from narrow single track trails before. I feel more comfortable wearing the pads and wouldn't ride without them.

I'm glad you are still here with us. I had a backpack too that cushioned the fall but most of the impact was on the ankle and knees. Very sore. :D I ordered the G-Form Pads by the way. Thanks :D

Moonshine, that sounds rather painful! Glad it wasn't more serious. Hope you wear a helmet; they help keep the heat off your head as well as protecting it. You might want to check that the wheels are still true; kinda sounds like you might have hit a patch of loose dirt or a hidden pothole.

Thanks for reminding me about the wheel. Yep. EBR folks made me buy a helmet few weeks ago. I saw scrape marks on the helmet. Nothing on the head. I even made a thread saying I hate wearing helmets. Funny how that worked out :D

I was trail riding in the desert with my friends german shepard Keiser when he saw a rabbit on the other side of my bike and ran right in front of me. I locked up the brakes and laid the bike down doing 15 mph. OUCH! Bent a crank on the bike and my right leg and arm looked like meat lovers pizza. Lesson here is don't ride with an unleashed dog and wear pads!

I ride with a group and the other week the group stopped and one guy near the back didn't notice until too late. Grabbed both brakes and went straight over the handlebars. The helmet protected his head but he fractured C1 and C2 in his neck. Was in hospital for a few weeks with a halo frame above his head. I understand he is home now but is will be wearing a collar for a few more months.
Take it easy on the front brake........

Moonshine, sorry to hear about your crash. Glad to hear you're not too badly hurt.

I crashed my Zuma four years ago at the end of the longest ride I ever made on it (a little over 30 miles). I'd taken a shortcut on a dirt path I'd been on a hundred times with my mountain bike, but the Zuma is no mountain bike. Going about 10 mph, the front tire slid out on a loose sand and gravel turn. I went down instantly, landing first on my lower right knee, second on my right shoulder, third a pretty good whack on the right side of my helmet. The Zuma is a heavy bike and it really ground my knee into the trail, it looked like hamburger and was bleeding pretty badly. I rinsed it off with my water bottle and wrapped my bandana around it. The only thing wrong with the bike was the chain came off, so I put it back on and rode the last 2 miles home (thanks, adrenaline). I thought maybe I would throttle it home but the battery was on the last dregs, ugh. When I got to the ER they x-rayed my knee to make sure they got all the gravel picked out, also x-rayed the shoulder and kept checking me for any sign of concussion. I left with 9 stitches on the knee and an arm sling due to acute AC sprain (separated shoulder). 36 hours later I went back to the ER because the knee laceration was infected. I spent a few hours getting IV antibiotics. They put me on 2 types of oral antibiotics and I had to go for a wound check every other day until the stitches were removed. It took 8 weeks for the laceration to heal completely and about three months more to restore flexibility to the knee; it was well over year before I could kneel on it. The shoulder took 8 months to heal and still acts up once in a while. The ER bills were staggering, over $7500 as sent to my insurance, and I had to pay a $2500 out of pocket. The whole experience sucked but it could have been much worse, so chalk it up to experience, and ride extra safe!
